How Macs and PCs stack up against each other

Although the PC maintains its grip on world market share for personal computers, Mac sales are consistently increasing every year, a new infographic suggests.

The infographic on Visual.ly by Temple University students Anthony Im, Jason Lee and Dan Nguyen, illustrates how Macs are becoming the favoured platform within businesses and shows how this translates into areas of social media.

For example, on the social network Facebook, the Facebook Page for Windows has more 'Likes' (followers) than the Facebook Page for Apple Inc - 5,351,477* followers versus 4,794,761 followers respectively.

However, Macs surpass PCs on microblogging site Twitter and on video-sharing site YouTube.

Apple's YouTube channel boasts 411,440 subscribers, whereas Windows' YouTube channel has 43,305 subscribers.

More Twitter users are fans of Apple/Macs (886,380) than PCs/Windows (411,075), and although Apple does not have a Twitter account, the App Store alone has more followers than Windows, according to the infographic.

Is there a purpose to this other than flame-baiting?

Reports are fun to read. I would take statistics with a grain of salt and lot of water - this would keep any flaming in check wink.gif

That primarily compares fanbases, not user bases. And it makes the assumption that Microsoft represents all personal computing companies. The whole "Mac vs PC" argument hasn't really been applicable since Apple has been using Intel processors, since there isn't a significant difference between Apple's products and any other computers out there. Now, if the rumors are true that they're planning to ditch Intel and go with some type of ARM-based chip to power their machines, the comparisons will again be valid at that point. But for now, it's just hype.

Agreed. Informative analysis would be platform based instead of a general Apple hardware statement.

Overall ARM vs x86 numbers would be interesting to compare. There are also rumors that AMD may embrace the ARM architecture, which would leave Intel as the lone producer of x86 chips, but also the biggest producer of computer chips in the world. As such, an "Intel vs. everybody" future is a distinct and intriguing possibility.
