a) Prefer to build my own. I usually don't save any initial outlay of money, but I end up with a better system that lasts longer. I wish I could build my own laptop computer.

a) Extremely important. I just installed an SSD in my hp pavilion dv8 laptop. Boot time on Win7 to desktop has gone from an average of 3 minutes to 35 seconds. Everything runs a lot snappier. Windows Experience Index for the primary hard disk went from a 5.9 to a 7.8.

I prefer to build my own boxes, replacing them about every 2 or 3 years.

I think SSDs are extremely important for overall system responsiveness and throughput in my heaviest duty application, which is remastering old music. I work with very large, high resolution files using audio software running on a Windows XP VM, using Virtualbox on top of Linux: disk I/O is king here!
