Depends on the need: for budget PC's I'll buy branded, for "performance" I'll build my own.

IRS only allows every 3 years, so I have three ... that way, I can replace annually smile.gif

In and of itself, it will improve system performance, but it depends on the performance of the rest of the machine as to how important that improvement is.

Not Canadian, but:
(((120+45)/4)-11) = 30.25
((120+45) /(4-11))= -23.57142857142857
(120+(45/4)-11) = 105.25
depending on the order of computation ...

Previously it was always build. It was just more fun and you can get every component you want.
But with all good things, it takes time and effort and time doesn't come easily nowadays with work and child on a way.
Heck I can't even commit to reinstalling an OS without a good few days break from work to sort out the troublesome bits.
Buying ready built is the way to go for me

Following on from the previous answer, I've moved away from desktops and use laptops only these days.
I get the power and portability at fixed price.
Previously I'd replace my laptop every 1 to 2 years but with an iPad I find the laptop only gets used for power apps only.
My need to upgrade seems to be pushed further and further away.

These days, its about speed..
SSD is important, but the cost and small sizes are a turn off as well

1) I prefer to build my own computer. That's all I've done for the last 15 years!
2) I'm usually performing some upgrade every 2 years or so.
3) I haven't used one yet. But I can't wait to try one. Everything I've read says it is the only way to go!
