My Compaq 610 laptop battery is not charging

Thread Starter

Hi,

I have a HP Compaq 610 laptop. Recently just 2 days ago my UPS battery started making trouble. The battery meter was showing 47%, then 46%, then 45%... the charge meter was dropping even as the mains adapter was connected to the laptop. If I removed the adaptor chord then the laptop would shut off indicating there was no back up from the battery. Today the battery meter shows 0% with a red cross mark over the battery icon. In the meanwhile I got error 2451: the UPS service could not start and the UPS tab in Power options went off. I restarted the UPS service and the ups tab is back there. What's the problem with my laptop battery? Pls. help

How old is the notebook? It sounded like a failed battery to me

I purchased this one during April 2010. BTW, the battery shows 35% now, though it's not charging at all. bored.gif

2yrs .. right time for battery to start to act crazily. You can try re-calibrating the battery and see if any improvements

. Check and see if your BIOS has an option for battery calibration or
. Try charging the battery to full, and let it run down in Windows, making sure to turn on do nothing when battery is down to certain percentage.

Hi,

QHN is right on, basically. You're in that grey area of battery life for Li-ION batteries. It's even money whether or not you'll be able to salvage it, you may have to just replace it.

In that vein, I would only add to QHN's advice by saying it's also best to stretch your battery once in a while. I try once a week to unplug my laptop and let it run down to at least 15% before plugging it back in. You can go longer if you like, it's just the routine I set for better or worse.

If you stay on AC all the time, the battery tends to go kaput faster because it never really has to do any work. Similarly, if you just unplug for five minutes and then reconnect AC constantly, it will also never stretch. Just like a human body, you have to work it out once a while for it to stay in shape.

If you work them out, you can usually get them up to decent ages. The average I usually hear for Li-ION batteries is about 3 years, but your mileage may vary.

Just my two cents.
