My daughter recently gave me her "dead" Acer Aspire 1640Z. It boots to the acer screen, then says no os found. My question is this: Can I revive it by switching a hard drive out of my Dell Inspiron E1505 with windows XP media direct that has a fried video card?

How large is that E1505 drive? Less than 120GB it should at least boot up.

cheers ...

I wouldnt think that it would work given that they are two different manufacturers..different drivers, components etc..now, if you had the recovery disks for the Acer and formatted the HD, then used the recovery disks, you would be good to go..or , if you have a copy of the Operating System disks. you could format the drive, and load the OS along with specific drivers from the acer site for that model..

No, no recovery disks or anything for the acer. Would loading the drivers on a flash drive work instead?

When the Acer boots it shows the Acer logo screen then goes to the black screen and says:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)

Copyright {C} 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v 2.13 (020326)

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

Operating System not found

followed by a command promt. when I attempt to type a command it just reboots.

An operating system on a hard drive for another brand laptop will not work in the Acer...As mentioned, you need restore disks for the Acer, or you need an OEM copy of whatever operating system came with the Acer (you didnt say)..even if you borrowed a copy from someone and used the product key from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop..but it must be the exact same OS...You cannot use a disk copy of XP Pro and use the sticker from WinXP Media Center

Try (also) booting up with a Linux Installation CD and see if you can access the hard drive

I did finally manage to boot the computer from an external hard drive with Linux Mint installed on it. It would not allow me to install any other hard drives internally. I am currently attempting to dual boot with Win XP loaded on the hard driver I mentioned in earlier posts.

Wondering if this model has a hard drive connector that goes bad.
