**Need help finding the right DVD drive

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion DV8110us laptop; which is like 6 yrs old.
It has windows xp home edition, sp2.

It came equipped with the drive: cd/dvd combo.
This drive can play cd's & dvd's; but as far as I know, it can only
burn cd's. I would like to know for sure, so I first off need help with that.
The name, in "my computer", states the name of that drive is DVD-RW drive (D:)-

I read that combo drives, can only read dvd's and NOT burn dvd's.
Is that so?

If that is so, then I would like to buy a new/used drive that can both play and record BOTH cds & dvds.
Do I have to get an HP or can I select of several brands (even generic) that may fit or work?

Please give me input on which types to get.

Also, do I just 'take' out the old drive & place the new drive that I buy in there?
Or do I need to install software to make it work?

Sorry for the multiple questions, but I want to buy the correct part, unless the drive I have can record.
Thanks in advance.....smile.gif

Thanks QHN,
I clicked on the link and noticed the model number & I then searched on ebay for that some kind for a little less.
But I also noticed something else. The picture for the drive (exterior where door is) is the same one that my laptop has.

I looked again on "my computer" and clicked on the properties of my dvd drive, & it just so happens to be the same one that you recommended.
HP Model GWA-4082N. So I guess it turns out that I do have a dvd drive that burns dvds too.

TO be sure, I called HP support. I thought, at first, that they wouldnt help me cause my unit is so old. But the rep there was nice
and confirmed that I DO have a dvd burner/player in my unit as well.

So now the other question. Do I need software to make burn dvds. THe rep said my unit came with MUVEE auto producer.
I found the folder but no program inside to launch it. My unit has Sonic installed but dont know if that is a burner.
Can you suggest a free one that is simple to use too?
Thanks again for the inputs
