Can anyone recommend a 11.6" i3 Laptop?

Hi there, I could do with some advice.

I am in the market for 11.6 Laptop but I don't want to spend Ultrabook money (I actually prefer a few more connections and an SD-card reader to the thin design).

I will at least occasionally use this for image-editing on the go, and do some raw-image processing. Therefore I'd prefer an Intel i3 processor over the AMD E450 and similar.

A matte screen would also be a nice to have.

So far I have only identified the Samsung Series 3 11.6 inch model that fits those criteria, the 13-powered version is just over $500

The only other i3-powered 11.6 machine in that price range i have found is the HP DM1. It's got similar spec but the case seems nicer. On the other hand it's got a glossy screen which I am not to keen on?

Are there any other 11.6", i3-powered machines in a similar price region that I haven't found yet? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Many thanks

Lars

Have you looked into Dell and Acer also?

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yes, Dell only has one 11.6in device on their website which is an Alienware gaming laptop, not really what  am after. Acer only have a 11.6 Netbook with AMD E450 processor. There seem to be two older 11.6 acer timeline models available on Amazon with i5 and i7 processor but they are not on the Acer website at the moment.

I was suprised to see that, after the success of the 11in Macbook Air, there are not more divices with that screen size currently available.

sub 12" screen notebooks are slated for business mostly, thus quite costly to make and sell. The Samsung you mentioned above is probably the best in this range for the moment, and the price.

I haven't experienced any 11.6" myself but still very happy with my Sony TZ 11.1"

Coming back to your OP of "will at least occasionally use this for image-editing on the go, and do some raw-image processing." ... would the AMD E450 be a better choice with its better integrated GPU than the i3 HD?

Anyway, Sony is having its 11.6" AMD on sales as well here ...

Thanks again, I would have thought the better graphics chip of the AMD processors is more relevant for moving graphics, games etc? And the processing power better for image editing...am I wrong?

I know they are a bit more costly than the typical 11.6" running at $999 base, but have you considered the Alienware m11x? The newest models are shipping with Intel Core i5, any particular reason why you want and i3? Minus a built in optical drive, the m11x has everything on it including an sd card reader, bluetooth, and dedicated video card and memory at 1Gb. Not to mention really cool illumination all over, you would be getting a lot of WOW effects from others.

In fact if you go DELL Outlet you can get one even with an i7 for less. The outlet has some i3 m11x for sale right now. Stick to a 7200RPM drive and at least 6Gb or more RAM, this will give you a far more enjoyable experience with Win 7. Hope this helps...

Can't say what is wrong and what is right. In the "old" days CPU and RAM were mostly important since GPU was still way behind in processing. Nowadays it is a complete different beast with chips special die, better media editing software that takes advantage of the GPU processing speed. On top of them all is the motherboard and its chipset/BIOS, how to make the CPU, RAM and GPU working together.
