Hi!
I wanna buy a new laptop. The main usage will be:-running Virtual machines, at least two at at time, Programming and testing, and other network related research work. I am all confused and may be somebody can help me out here.
I was thinking of either Dell or Vaio. Dell is offering 3rd gen i7 processor, 3612QM, 8 GB RAM with a nvidia 540 M 2GB video card for 1000$. Sam laptop but with 2nd gen processor i7 (2.40 ghz) is available under XPS series for 1400$. Sony Vaio offers same configuration with Nvidia 640 LE 2 GB card for 1500$. Rest config is okay for me in any of the three systems.
What is this fuzz about the 3rd gen processors?
How can I decide if I need it or not. Also, can anybody tell me why inspiron series has better config than XPS that too under lower price?
Thanks

I have this memory installed in my Inspiron 14R. 6gb (one 2gb & one 4gb). Great performance! I highly recommend Kingston.

I don't know what type of virtualization you want to run on a lappy (i.e. vmware vs virtualbox) but I would recommend a workstation class machine. Dell Precision / HP Elitebook or maybe Dell Latitude. I think there is a Vostro model that would suffice but you need to think beyond the price and low end machines.
I don't think the Inspiron will do you justice in the long run. The XPS has hot specs but I have never had the opportunity to use them.
I would go with 16G ram and a model that can have 2 HDD.
I would also look at the dock options. If you have a good dock that you can add cards and you can assign network cards to each VM and external SATA or SCSI, and do cool stuff like that. then all the better.
I think that the ability to expand your hardware to support your task now and in the near term would be a better driver than costs.
