Backpack Recommendations?

Thread Starter
Hello, I haven't been around here in a long time and lots of things have changed. I've done a search of the forums but the most recent relevant posts were several years ago.

I'm going to medical school in the fall and am going to be walking to campus. I've been carrying messenger bags through undergrad but the length of the walk makes a one-shouldered solution a bad idea for my back/hips. I'm looking for a smallish laptop backpack with a water bottle pocket on the side large enough to hold my 1L Nalgene. It hold my 15.6" notebook, my iPad, and one paper notebook along with the necessary accoutrements (pens, wallet, etc) without getting too bulky. Weather resistance is a huge plus as I am not allowed to park on campus so the walk is mandatory in every type of weather.

Tell me about your backpacks! What you like, what you don't like. I'm searching around on purchasing websites as well and looking at reviews there but I'm worried I'm missing some of the best bags.

Thanks.

Very nice seeing you posting again smile.gif Hope things are going well.

I still have my Lowepro backpack carrying camera gears and notebooks. Not sure if they are still available - you might want to check their line on Amazon. Regarding weatherproof I come to realize that getting an extra cover for the pack works better than looking for the waterproof material. Too many pockets etc make it hard to really trust the material, and the extra cost of course.

cheers ...

Hey, Ayla smile.gif How are you?

I agree with Q on not relying on the waterproof material. I've had some problems where the waterproofing has failed on me and I had wet papers laugh4.gif Get some kind of extra cover if you expect rain. I've also been very fond of Targus bags and backpacks for my electronics over the years. I cant say enough good things about them.

targus is good stuff, I've got one I've carried for many years. I also agree about the covers, and the lowepro's often come with them. cant speak for the other brands as I just don't know.

good to see you again noob! Angel.gif

My being a major Alienware user and of all their sizes from 11.6" to the discontinued m15x to also the m17x when I am mobile, I always use my MobileEdge Alienware Messenger bag, the Odyssey Edition. They have replaced it with the Orion now also with a Tactical colored design featured for the game release. I have them all...

I am referring to messengers here but they also make the equivalent backpack as well. And you don't have to be an Alienware user to enjoy a great bag with lots of support and protection of your system, cool styling, comfortable, weather protection, and tons of pockets and organizing. I do on occasions prefer a backpack, especially when air traveling, so I have used in the past other designs by these brands...

Mobileedge - www.mobileedge.com (the makers of Alienware styles)

Booq - www.boogbags.com

Case Logic - www.caselogic.com

SwissGear (Wenger) - these you can search for as they do not have a specific site to buy from

Timbuk2 - www.timbuk2.com

In fact go to www.ebags.com and specify a search for what you want and style, even colors, you might find something perfect for you, and they have great prices.

My reasoning is thay you want to protect your system, carry whatever you need, look cool doing it, and not hate having to carry a bag because its not comfortably designed!

If you decide to stick to messenger bags for their looks, may I suggest the Ego bag by Tom Bihns; http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0830

Here is a backpack bag, The Smart Alec; http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/TBP/TB0825

Very weather resistant and sturdy; I still have my Superego bag for 4 years now. No frayed threads at all; though I had to replace a plastic buckle.

If you need a backpack and not a messenger bag, then go through their line-up through their website.
I do not have experience with the Smart Alec bag; but can very strongly vouch for the quality of their products and messenger bag that I use.
