video issue

Im not bad at fixing desktops so I bought 2 broken laptops cheap. Figure i cant go wrong by just selling the ram, hard drives, cpu, battery, etc, if i cant get them going.

Best one is a Dell Inspiron 1750. It works fine except that I have to use an external monitor. The main screen, well, it boots to windows because i can see a small ribbon of windows on the left and the right hand side. The rest is a combination of a bunch of thin colored lines and then a very large black x over top the whole thing. The X is like someone threw some black paint and it happened to make a sort of X. I have no way of finding out if someone sat on the screen or not but there is no sign of actual damage to the screen. It seems to me like i need a new screen for this but i am new at reparing laptops so i dont know for sure. Maybe the video card? Can anyone help me diagnose what the problem would be? the notebook is worth fixing as it has 4 gb ram, 500 gb hard drive, runs win 7, and a dual core cpu. It shipped the middle of 2010 so its not even 2 yrs old yet.

.

Any help would be appreciated.

thank you

If you have no issue with an external display then I would say it's either the LCD cable or the LCD itself that is failing

How do i find out which one is bad?

Open up the LCD housing and probably the power strip from the top case- Dell Support Site has good service manual for your model.

Play around with the cable connectors - from the LCD and the mainboard ends. If they are fine then go for the LCD replacement. Unless you have an extra cable somewhere around

Hi

My name is SUBHANKAR & I work for the Social Media & Community Team at Dell.

Since the laptop is working fine with an external monitor then it’s quite obvious that the issue is with the LCD of the laptop & to test the functionalities of the LCD follow the below steps::

Turn off the system and press & hold down D & then tap the power button once & then release all buttons.

If getting multiple colors means LCD is alright need to concentrate on LCD cables

If not getting any colors means LCD failure.

Hope this would give you an idea about which way to proceed.

Thanks,

DELL-Subhankar S
