Ubuntu on Aspire 5315

Thread Starter

Hello.

I am trying to replace Windows Vista with Linux Ubuntu on my Aspire 5315. The Ubuntu installation has formatted the hard drive so the Vista restore partition is gone. Unfortunately I am unable to install Ubuntu because the machine overheats and shuts down before the new installation is complete.

I have just discovered that there is a known issue with Ubuntu and fans. Some people have found that with the 5315 updating the BIOS cures the problem. I thought I might give it a try but unfortunately I have no operating system on the laptop. Can the BIOS be updated without an OS? Or does anyone know another workaround to this problem?

A few comments:

  • I have opened it up and cleaned all the fan, grills and airways and it makes no difference.
  • The fan is not dead. It runs for a few seconds when the laptop is first turned on. After that it doesn't seem to come on at all which seems to suggest that something isn't controlling it properly.
  • There was no problem under Vista, even though the fan was blocked.

I would be very grateful for any thoughts or ideas on this please.

May be it is a coincidence. Try installing Vista (or any other OS) again and see if the same issue occurs

cheers ...

Another case where the Restore Disks should have been made
