HP DV6000 - Need help desperately!

I am my wits end! So a client brought in a dv6000 that was dropped, motherboard tested bad, it would only blink the power led. Ordered a replacement and it did the same thing, they sent out another but now it will either blink only once with only the power supply or 3 times with the battery and power supply, or not at all with just the battery.

Power brick is putting out 19 volts so its good, tried all different configurations with the ram and other components. The dc jack shows just under 19 volts exiting on the wires so I think that's good too.

I get no fans or anything so can someone with experiance on this model please chime in? The only other components in this thing are the dc jack and power button/media controls. They light up and obviously the laptop responds some so what can it be!? Seriously I'm desperate since I cannot afford to not get this thing up and running but I'm also on a shoestring budget at the moment.

DC jack does light up btw

Hi killj0y,

Welcome to the forum!

I do not own a DV6000, but I do have a DV9000 and the 6000 is basically just a smaller version of the 9000.

Assuming that the replacement motherboard you bought is not also defective or damaged, you've noted that the power supply and power connection in the system seems good. What I would do is the following...

Remove all removable material except the minimum needed to start the machine: Remove the DVD/CD drive, the hard drive, the wireless card, and use only one stick of RAM. Preferrably a stick that you KNOW is good (confirm it in another system if available and try BOTH sockets separately in the system if need be). This way, the bare minimum of hardware is present and we can be relatively sure that if all the ducks are in a row it will start.

That being said, I think one thing that would be worth your time to check is the CPU. If the system was dropped, it's entirely possible that the bounce damaged/destroyed the chip. Since I have not had an issue with CPU installation in my 9000, I do not know what the reaction would be to a bad/mis-installed chip but it's possible that could be it.

If you have another matching chip available, try installing that. If not, you may need to order one (depending on the actual 6000 series, it could be either Socket M or Socket P, you may want to dig a bit). You can find some of the more common, less powerful chips for BOTH sockets out there for relatively cheap.

With all of the above, you have a new/refurbished board, a known good RAM stick, and possibly a different, presumably working CPU in the system. All that installed in the system shell with what appears to be a good power connection SHOULD bring the system up.

It's possible there's an issue with another connection somewhere in the system as well, causing a short or something along that line. Check the wire connections if need be.

I would definitely start with those, it sounds like there's definitely a hardware problem and between stripping out the "extras" not needed to actually BOOT the system and swapping in KNOWN good hardware for potentially bad you can start ruling things out.

Let us know any updates!

Regards,
O Shadow Fox O
