HELP !!! COULDNT UNINSTALL AVAST FREE VERSION ANTIVIRUS

hey guys
i am using dell laptop and windows 7 on it and had avast free home edition installed for a while . bot soon i came to know that its virus defin and engines are not autoupdating so i tried to do it manually but its not working so i tried to uninstall but it says the error as shown in image . i even tried windows 7 managers smart uninstalller but it doesnt show avast in installed programms .
so guys pl help me to remove it

Try downloading Ccleaner and uninstalling with that. If that doesn't work, then reboot into safe mode (restart and hit the F8 button repeatedly when you see the Dell screen until you get to the Windows boot menu. Then choose safe mode) Often things are easier to uninstall in safe mode.

thanks . u were helpful . i got it done
instead of safe mode ,i unchecked selfdefense of avast and then ran avsclear .exe(downloaded from avast uninstall instructions)
helped . thanks a lot . now runnning current version
