** Laptop screen is cloudy and foggy unless I am holding screen with slight pressure. Please...

HP Pavilion dv8110us laptop
sp3 Windows Home edition.

My LCD screen is cloudy and foggy. If I hold, squeeze certain parts of the bezel, it looks normal (except for (3-4) vertical lines on my screen). If I let go of this pressure, its cloudy/foggy again.
Here is some history on my LCD screen.

I had 2 broken LCD hinges. I ordered them, & installed them only to realize that they had sent me the wrong ones. I needed the single lamp hinges and they had sent me the dual lamp ones. They were able to hold the LCD up but they were not a perfect fit and the entire screen had some gap so the bezel was never put on.

The screen was having this issue mentioned here. Most of the time it was easily fixed by tapping on the screen on the side, or squeezing/letting go. At times I used a clothes pin to keep it tight (keeping in mind that the wrong hinges & missing bezel might not be giving the screen a good snug contact to whatever is behind the glass, etc). And this foggyness was not a daily issue but it was often.

So for more than a year the bezel was off and wrong hinges were on. Then, I finally ordered the right ones & we put them on 2 months ago, and my LCD screen is physically sound and tight now.

Even ow that I have correct hinges and a nice and tight LCD screen, this cloudy/fogginess keeps happening & got worse gradually. At first it was occasional fading/clouding and it fixed with a tap or squeeze or tilting the screen back or forth. But today, I squeeze, tilt screen, tap and for a split second, I can see my normal screen, but it goes back to the cloudy foggy state.

Today, I noticed that If I place my hand on the back left side of the screen, and pull it slightly forward toward me (as if I am going to close it but dont) and HOLD it still, My picture looks normal and good. As soon as I let go of the screen or release some pressure, it goes back to cloudy.

Note that I can still see what I am doing and typing. But it is hard on some websites that are lighter in color with alot of white.Pictures, and dark background websites look better than light colored ones.

When attached to an external monitor or LCD tv, the picture shown on these other units is normal.

Also note that when the correct hinges were replaced 2 mos ago, so was this little cable that came with the hinges. it is like 8 inches long and has a connecter to it. Dont remember the name of it but it could be an inverter screen cable for the screen. I thought it be best to use it since it came with the hinges. I dont think that this is the problem, though, because even when it had the old original cable, it was still doing this (but not that much)-

Sorry I made this post long but I thought it be best to fill you in on some history to see if it is relevant to my issue.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I would look into either the cable, inverter and then the possibility of another screen

The video cable on the back of the screen has bad connection. unplug it, then lift the pins on the connector that's on the screen. You can do that by gently pressing in a paper pin between the plastic and the connector pins. very gently, you just want to lift them a little bit so they connect properly.

Try pressing your screen, in the front, about 4 inches from the left and three inches from the top. That problem should go away right there. If you get a proper video with that pressure test, just lift those pins, it'll be fine.

Hi all,
@ Billa48....Thanks for the advise. I posted this question more than 9 mos ago and my laptop problem was never resolved.
I have since got a new laptop, so I have not had to deal with the cloudy old laptop.
Still, I do want to say that I think your solution does make sense because just a month ago, a very strong clamp was placed on the top left of the screen
(2 inches from the left corner) where it puts a lot of pressure in that area and the screen looks as it should.

So if this clip is taken off, the cloudy screen comes back of course.

Still, we will try the cable thing you suggested. We always did think it would be just a bad connection somewhere in the screen area that got " unloose" at some point. But it baffled us that it at one point was random and not always happening.

Thanks to all who contributed to my post. If we happen to open up the laptop and do this 'tightening' of the cables and it fixes, or not, the problem, I will post back.

thats alright, i rarely look at post dates of unresolved problems, you never know, learn something new every day about a computer layin around that fixes it right away.

I had a dell 1520 did that cloudy thing to me. It would work fine with a whole screen replacement from a 1521. I narrowed it down to the cable then that connector. Overtime, opening and closing the screen, and putting stuff on top of your laptop creates this flex in the screen chassis, things start getting loose. Lift those pins and also put a piece of foam or card board behind that connector between the screen and the back cover. Keep it tight and in place. That ought to work. Enjoy.
