Some questions about specs

Thread Starter

Hello,

I am looking for a new laptop and I had some questions about processors, RAM and optical drives, in order to allow me to choose the one I would want.

Ok, so, I have two options: either get a laptop with an i7 processor and 6GB of RAM or get a laptop with an i5 and 8GB of RAM. So, what's more important, RAM or the processor? Which one will give better performance?

Also, since all the i series processors are quad core, if there is an i5 with a speed of 2.5GHz and an i7 with a speed of 2.2Ghz, does this mean that the i5 is better? This speed is it for all the processors of just one core?

Another question I had is about optical drives: can a blu-ray ROM, at least, read DVDs and CDs? What about writing on DVDs?

One of the prospective laptops that I want to buy is an Acer. Is Acer a good brand? I live in an African country and, so, I won't be able to access all the help and maintenance that people in, for example, USA have access to if their computer breaks down or has some problem so I want to make sure that the laptop I take is reliable. So, is Acer a good and reliable brand?

1. 5GB ram is plenty unless you are into VM ding, so take the i7 / 6GB combination winknudge.gif
2. I go with number, so take the i5 and 2.5GHz
3. all depends on the optical drive specifications
4. Acer is good as any, as long as you can access local support

cheers ...
