Hey guys I have a G60JX with a core i5 430m processor. Can I underclock it with SetFSB? And if so, how?

SetFSB is mostly being used for over-clocking, not sure about the other direction.

Why the need for under-clocking? Running too hot?

cheers ...

Yes, it is running too hot again, and everything has been cleaned, I have applied new thermal paste, and the CPU is running at about 80C maximum after doing a stress test, and is also very loud. Do you know which way would be best for me to underclock?

80C is not bad bad, but loudness can be a pain. Have you tried running in battery powered power scheme, regardless if you are plugged in?

Not sure about under-clocking a processor on notebooks myself. No option in BIOS for speed stepping?

cheers ...

Nope, there's no Speed Step feature. And I have tried adjusting power settings, it's not much of help. I've only noticed the heat because of when I'm playing a non demanding game such as Garry's Mod, the fans are really loud.

You can try my following charlatan tips to dampen the fan loudness

. elevate the notebook a bit higher of a flat solid surface
. (totally at your own risk here): 1 drop of graphite oil in the fan bearing, you would need to peel off the cover and re-glue it after the drop
. find a way to bring more air into the housing (boring holes or using a notebook cooler)

cheers ...

I do believe you can underclock it via SetFSB. Probably the clock generator is the same as in my G51J and SetFSB does support it. I've just overclocked but underclocking should be similar. Asus Power4Gear should however do about the same but a little more convenient. 80C is highish, my 720M tops at 76-77 (quite loud, too) and the max temperature for these chips is 105C.
