Seeing ultrabooks suffer from weak sales, notebook brand vendors have turned to push ultra-like notebooks, causing slim panel and metal chassis to both see shortages, according to sources from upstream supply chain.
The thicknesses of the traditional panels are about 5.2-5.5mm, while slim panels are 3.6mm and panels used in ultrabooks are only 2.85-3mm.
In early June, supply of slim panels was greatly affected by strong demand from downstream brand vendors. Although the supply gap is recovering gradually, related supply is still rather tight, the sources noted.
Meanwhile, metal chassis continues to suffer from shortage as Apple currently has booked up most of the capacity from makers. Although the two major metal chassis makers Catcher Technology and Foxconn Technology have both been aggressively establishing new CNC machines, the capacities are still unlikely to fulfill all demand even until the end of 2012.

Does this mean that price would further go down once the manufacturing is being ramped up?
