Svideo?

This may be an obvious question but I'll ask anyway. I am contemplating buying the 6809. Very close actually. I was just wondering if the svideo out will basically send any video playing on the notebook to any device supporting svideo. Like if I was playing a VCD (or any video) in Windows media player and I connect the Svideo to my TV would I see the VCD playing on the tv? I'm thinking it does this. Also can you view the whole desktop on a TV? If it doesn't do any of these what can it be used for?
Thanks.

I think you are correct in assuming you can just hook up an svideo cable to an svideo tv/dvd player ect ect. But the resolutions probrably will be different then the 1280x800 on the laptop's lcd. I am not sure if it has a native s video resolution or what it is.

I have used my svideo to run to my widescreen 65" HDTV. I am not sure why, but the quality is not nearly as good as the LCD. I only tried this as a novelty on the off chance that it would look good enough to play games. I mean, it wasn't so bad as to hurt your eyes, but compared to the native LCD it is no comparison. Plus part of sides of the picture were cut off no matter how much I messed with the size and position of the screen from the ATI display settings.

Please correct me if I am wrong. The S-Video resolution is limited to 480 vertical lines interlaced which is NTSC standard. This is good enough for playing DVD but not to do anything else which requires higher resolution. If you want higher resolution you can try the ATI VGA to HDTV donggles which I am not sure will work with this laptop. It does with my desktop Radeon 8500. Even then, the DVD resolution is still limited to 480 lines due to macrovision protection. Hope it helps

Yep...S-Video can use up to 480 lines at 60 fields a second interlaced...i.e. it uses the NTSC standard. The ATI DVI->HDTV and VGA->HDTV adapters only work with those cards explicitly mentioned on ATI's website. That's because these adapters are not converters and rely on the card to supply the correct signal. (In this case YPrPb signal)

Thanks for the responses. I don't expect it to be as good quality as the monitor. It would be nice to view certain movies obtained from various areas and not have to format and burn them. And then you also don't have to worry about compatibility issues. I guess the best is still yet to come.
