Macbook Air vs Lenovo X1 Carbon - I need help!

Thread Starter

Hi all,

I'm soon planning on purchasing a new ultrabook and have settled on two different devices as the title suggests, but I'm having trouble deciding between the two. I'd be using the laptop for both home and work utilites and need a device that has good battery life and good for travel. I've done some pretty extensive research on both machines and they both seem like excellent devices that are on par with eachother, but I want to make sure I make the right decision. I have a $1500 spending limit. Below I'll list what I like and dislike about each machine:

Lenovo X1 Carbon

Pros:

Screen - 14"1600x900 in a 13" frame.

Keyboard Ergonomics and Backlit Feature

Rapid Charge Battery

ThinkPad Durability and Windows Business Machine

*$900 price tag for base model (Source: Lenovo Rep) I'd likely go with max specs though.

USB 3.0

Cons:

Aug 20th release date

No Reviews

1st Revision

Macbook Air 2012

Pros:

Mountain Lion

Backlit Keyboard

Easy integration with iPhone 4s

Proven Track Record & 3rd Revision

Can run a separate Windows Partition for Business Utilities

Trackpad

Thunderbolt

USB 3.0

Customer Service

Cons:

Screen - 13" 1440x900

Keyboard

Please help me decide. Thank you all in advance for your help!

laugh4.gif You place the PRO of OS X direct with the CON of being not optimized for Windows on an Apple machine.

Nothing to decide then, go with the Lenovo. With a good track record the new Lenovo model can't go wrong and it's for sure being optimized for Windows.

Well then I guess my question is: By having a Macbook running a OSX and Windows, are there any limitations I might encounter on the Windows side of things? What would be more efficient about having the Carbon over having a windows partition in a Mac. I would likely use OSX for home use and Windows for business.

If you just want to use Windows for business then it should not be a problem. The main issue is that you will be pretty much relying on Apple releasing the updates for Windows Boot Camp (or whatever) and not trying to go outside and picking devices on your own, unless of course when you are willing to play with them

Lenovo still needs to lower its X1 price down more. At $1300 (current exchange rate) it will not be able to compete with Apple. Hopefully this will change once it hits the US shores

I am in the same boat. I am using an X301 and looking for a replacement. However, neither MacBook Air nor X1 Carbon offers a touch screen. With Win 8 releasing soon, I would wait.

If you intend to use Windows OS, stay with Lenovo. Paying for another Windows OS license to run on a Mac does not make sense to me.

Lenovo is offering its Thinkpad Twist Windows 8 convertible notebook/tablet (touchscreen) for about $800 smile.gif

X301 has a display of 1440x900. ThinkPad Twist has a display of 1366x768. This looks like a slightly freshen up of the X230 with Win 8 and touch screen. The max storage with a SSD is 128GB.

Going from an X301 to a Twist would not be an upgrade. I am looking for a Touch screen Win 8 with a minimum of 258GB SSD.

My X301 is built like a tank and I lug this back and fro daily. There are only a couple of things that are not right. The soft paint is peeling off at my left hand rest area and the notebook runs too hot when I play Angry Bird once awhile. It ran so hot that the notebook shuts down. I ended up getting a Zalman notebook cooler to solve this problem.

Both Sony Vaio Duo 11 Ultrabook and Asus Zenbook Touch UX31A sound promising.

Sony Vaio S Series 13P SVS13A290X Premium Plus would be ideal to replace my X301 if this comes with a touch screen. This Sony has a DVD bay like the X301 which a lot of others lack. It also has a graphic card that could be optioned to 2GB.

If my X301 dies on me today, this is the one I would most likely to get.
