So I have this ebay bought laptop.
I initially wasnt able to identify the exact model it is, the most I can discern is that it is the Area-51 m17x - the stuff on the bottom of the case says it is an m17x-r1 but I cannot find anything helpful about that.
The closest I can find to it is this:
The only differences to the setup were no optical drive, 2x nivida quadro fx 3600m 512mb ddr3 (when this was working, the it seemed only one gfx card was recognised and the other was showing just as a vga something or other) and the hdd is smaller capacity.
The system seemed fine, in reasonable working order, but I took it unto myself to reinstall windows. This turned out ok but the wireless was not appearing so could only connect to the internet by wired connection. Windows could not or would not identify the wireless card that was inside, so I (carefully) opened the machine up - with an anti-static wrist strap attached to myself - so that I could find what wireless card it was.
Now that I know what wireless card it is (Intel® Centrino® Ultimate 6300), I thought I would check the connection of the hotkey ribbon cable as well as the ribbon cables for the keyboard. I must say that the alien head, logo, keyboard, and hotkeys had never lit up as I knew from the photos on ebay.
This is where things must have gone wrong.
- I took out the hotkey board ribbon cable as well as the keyboard ribbon cable to check them for damage. I may have mishandled the hotkey circuit board.
- So I replace them back in the proper places now armed with the information to hopefully have the wireless working again.
- On screwing back in the backplate for the keyboard (http://www.ztronics.com/parts-by-brand/alienware/m17x-r1/alienware-m17x-r1-keyboard-back-plate.html) I lose one of the screws into the machine, but thankfully I find it near to where I lost it on what looks like a grey heat sink, so I cannot say if this caused damage.
End result: I cannot turn the f*ing thing on again.
If anyone can help me get this running again, I will be eternally grateful.
