Acer 1830T will not boot

Hi guys I would really appreciate some help with my laptop problem.

I usually use my laptop before bed, close it on battery, then use it the next day without issue for a year or more now. I assume it goes into sleep mode.

However I woke up to what seemed to be a dead battery the other morning. So I plugged in, however when I powered on the laptop would not get to the Windows 7 screen:

- It would go to the first screen with the white Acer logo
- Then a line would flash a few times on the very top left of the screen
- Then the screen goes black
- Touching the power button here kills it instantly.

A quick Google brought up a number of things to try, the most legitimate seemed to be booting in safe mode and to try repair from the Windows 7 disk.  Booting in safe mode, which I was told is F8, did nothing, brought me to the same blinking curser than blank screen. The repair failed and told me: http://oi45.tinypic.com/2lj4wf9.jpg

So where do I go from here? Obviously I want to get this unit running again, if nothing else, get what's on the hard drive off.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Try put in a Windows Installation disk, boot it up under it. Then see if you can access the hard drive from there

cheers ...

Sorry about my computer ignorance, but how exactly would I do this? And if I could access it, what would I do from there?

Thanks

1) Secure a Windows 7 installation disk, the same version as what you have shown underneath the notebook. Not sure how would you go about this, borrowing from friend, relatives etc ...

2) Put the disk in the optical drive, start it up

3) if it starts then just follow the instruction as how to install Windows onto the drive - this is where and what I meant if you can access the drive, if Windows installation disk sees the drive

4) if the drive is accessible then hopefully you have the option to repair it

cheers ...

Yea I did that already and it failed. See link in OP for repair failure message.

If I read your OP correctly, you were trying to boot into Safe Mode - my suggestion was to boot directly from the Windows Installation CD, meaning your notebook must start from reading the disk in the optical drive

I have a hard time deciphering your post smile.gif (dense sometimes here)

Just some questions.

a. You did start up with a Windows installation disk (booting up from CD/DVD), correct?
b. And when you tried the "repair" option you have the error as mentioned, correct?
c. Did you try, instead of choosing "repair", select instead Windows Installation option, and see if the installation process can access the hard drive?

OK. I didn't understand. Won't the installation wipe all that is on my HD?

Here's what we want to achieve - to be certain that the drive is still being accessible.

So, if that is the case (we hope) - Windows Installation should come back with some messages.

a. you already have an OS installed - would you want to repair?
b. it sees nothing on the drive (I hope not)
c. it does not see a drive ...

Go ahead and see how far you get smile.gif

cheers ...

Cool. Let us know and good luck

In case you get the option of "another OS version available" - go ahead and do the repair since it will not destroy your personal data.

I been so busy I hadn't much time to address this but I ended up using Ubuntu boot CD to retrieve my files. I assume when I get around to reinstalling Windows I will be all set. Thanks for the replies.
