acer aspire 1680 help please

Thread Starter

hello all i have an acer aspire laptop and am looking for a 2nd opinion before i buy the part which i think is the problem.

basically it wont turn on when i press the power button all i get is the power light and hard drive light flash and then nothing, so i went ahead and opened it up and had a play with the power button board and eventually got  it to turn on but now it turns off randomly, there is definately no overheating and i've checked the usb ports for any damage and they are fine am i right in thinking this is the power button board at fault ?

thanks all.

You mean you have the notebook on and working with it for a while and then it just shuts itself off randomly? If you restart it again do you get any error messages?

yes i had it working for like 20mins and then it shutsdown no error messages at all no warnings just goes off and now at the moment it will not switch on just does the same press the power button it flashes together with the hard drive light and does nothing.

i may gamble on it being the power button board.

Would this phenomena happen with both battery and ac adapter - alone on each circumstance?

And what type or error message once you (can) restart the comp back on?

well i replaced the power button board and it still the same problem, this happens both on charger and battery, i took the case off the laptop to investigate further and it did come on, i left it idling for about 10mins and it switched itself off ? i wonder if its overheating but that does not explain why it wont come on from cold unless it has a function where if the fan is faulty or not working it wont come on at all.

ok so i stripped it totally ready to test resistors with my voltage meter, so with the case off and the motherboard out, powered it up and it started working ? tested it umpteen times by switching it off and on and it was fine, so to test i left it in the bios it stayed on in the bios for 30mins without any issues so i put it all back together powered up and while loading upto windows it shut off again and now its the same problem, press power and all that happens is power light and hard drive light flashes and thats it.

Done this and to my amazement its worked and the laptop is on and idleing i see how long it lasts if it lasts.

thanks all.

Nice to hear. Not too much spices when baking I hope tongue.gif

Just don't push it to max when running things relating to GPU performance and it will last you a long time. And you can always bake it again a few times winknudge.gif
