How to find a short on the motherboard

Thread Starter

Hi there, I trying to find a short on my motherboard,I dont know which component causes a short, I use a multimeter but it always shows zero since there is a short all over basically when I connect a multimiter to the postivie and the negative end it always gives us zero ohms resistance since it is shorting, but where, that I can't figure out. Any help would be appreciated on what equipment to buy, Thank you Tom

Search the net for "Computer Desktop & Laptop Motherboard Diagnostic Test Card" or something like that, plus you would need a good schematic for your notebook model.

Not sure if the investment would be worth more than just replacing the board(s) itself

My Laptop shuts off 7 second after booting . I have two same laptops and I exchange the parts , but one of them still doing this ?

you swapped a) and b)

supposedly a) was doing it before, is it now b) that shuts down now, or is it still a) ?

^^I have been trying to figure out your statement before going any further here!^^

You swapped out the part(s) and one of them still doing this! Which one? Did one unit work before? Could it be possible that both comps are bad?

You have 2 exact computers. Let us name it a) and b). Let us suppose that a) works and b) doesn't.
After swapping out the parts, is b) now working?

One of the unit works perfect , but the other one not . Shuts off  after 7 seconds . I thought is some part and swapped them , but without success.
Both are Sony VGN-NR498E .
Last i left motherboard + ram and cpu and turn on but the same result .

Its black screen it doesn't shoes anything and shut down . 7 seconds

so, which one is this that is NOT working. The one with the good parts from the other or the one without the good part?

I have 2 computer one it works fine other one stopped working and i decided to swapped all parts to diagnose where the problem comes from .

I switch RAM , CPU and etc . . ... Finally I but the computer keeps shut down after 7 seconds . Finally I know the problem comes from motherboard , and that i asked how I can find a short on the motherboard . If i can fix it .

so you swapped every possible parts except the motherboard? Now I got it, was not quite sure if you had swapped the motherboard as well.

Like I mentioned above, you would need at least a good schematic of the board model in order to find where the short is.

What kind of SMD fuse is this one ?

Can't tell you - don't have a schematic on hand. Are you sure that's the one? Then just remove it and take it to an electronic shop, they should have replacements

Or give these people a shout, they might be able to help you out

There is no electronics shop in chicago , i think in USA at all .

Everything is online ... You get something if you don't like it return it . ...

Everywhere has except here !

Have you forwarded the pic and a mail to the people in the above link? Maybe they can help picking up the right SMD fuse for your board

Darn. I was hoping that they have a schematic somewhere winknudge.gif
Only way left if you are sure that's the problem, remove the SMD and take a look at the marking

also another problem !

My mother has Asus Eee PC 1001PX that will work off of the battery, but when it's plugged in with the ac adapter it does not charge. Checked the dc jack and it does not appear to be loose. Also attempted to reheat the solder to no avail.

What is the problem here ?

I would try with another working charger first
