K54C memory replacement

Thread Starter

I have a bad memory module on an Asus K54C but am not sure where the modules are?  These is an expansion slot that is easily accessible but I am thinking that the memory is under the keyboard. If so does anyone have a disassembly instructions of manual for this model?

The bottom cover opposite from the battery should be where the hard drive and memory module are being accessible. Take a look and see

Thanks for the response but I saw that and it appears to be an expansion slot only.  I have to get to the factory installed memory dimms so I can swap them out

you can try using this guide as reference. Take some pics of your own project and share with us if you would.

I saw that, different set up.  I found a motherboard on Ebay and there is indeed a single DIMM slot on it so apparently this laptop has only one stick of memory in it.  I verified with CPUz so looks like I'll have to take the entire thing apart to replace a bad DIMM.

I understand that the guide is for some different models, but short from finding the correct guide for this one, you should be able to use the other as some sort of reference (keyboard removal etc ..) and hopefully get to the slot without tearing everything apart. Good luck, and take some pictures smile.gif

just remove the keyboard assembly, you just need a tool with sharp tip[a small kife for the example]  and push back the lockers in the upper part of the keyboard assy.i think tey are 4 of these lockers.

Keyboard is easy, it is the steel frame underneath that is tough.  I ordered a DIMM today and I'll take some photos as I go along.  I have disassembled several laptops but this is reidiculous, IMHO, to replace a DIMM.

ha ha ha ... you haven't replaced a ram module under the keyboard on an eMachines 68xx tongue.gif Now, that is beyond ridiculous, it's painful laugh4.gif

Well, I finally got around to replacing that DIMM in the K54C and after disassembling theentire thing and wondering who designed it like this, i discovered why, there is no DIMM in this laptop.  The memory ,as far as I can discern, is part of the mobo!.

Those four little chips are the included memory and they are mounted opposite face of the memory expansion slot so if there is a memory problem, which mine has, it looks like you need to replace the entire mobo.  I installed a 4GB stick in the memory slot that is easily accessible in the bottom compartment, matching it to the DDR3 speed of the mobo memory, for 8GB total and hopefully dual channel operations.  I don't have a lot of faith that this will ameliorate the problem I am having but figured I'd give it a shot.

My other photos did not turn out as I used a phone camera, sorry, but basically you remove every screw, top and bottom, and then pry the top and bottom apart.  My tools:

I use a lot of little dishes to put various screws into and use a slip of paper to identify its location.  That green block is a tool magnetizer, a must-have for disassembly/assembly of laptops. The green stick is a plastic pry I use to pry the parts apart and of course a jeweler's screwdriver.  That particular model is a Husky HD-74501 that stores three extra tips in the handle and spins nicely when screwing things in or out.

I had to pull the hard disk drive (HDD), optical disk drive (ODD)and CPU cooler to see if the memory was on the other side (it isn't) but disassembly was fairly straightforward, every screw must be removed, including two little ones that are revealed when you pull the ODD.

Any questions just post or PM me and sorry the other pictures turned out so bad.

You just saved me a lot of effort. I kept asking the same thing - how in the hell am I going to get in there?  This damn thing does NOT look like it's designed to come apart.
