Help! inspiron 6400 with lines on screen. Is this a graphics card issue?

Ok this all started when my screen went black 2 years ago. I took it to a local computer shop and they replaced the screen and inverter. When i got it back i turned it on and the screen had lines through the artifacts. These lines are faint and are only noticeable through the artifacts. I called the shop and told them what i was seeing but they said for sure wasn't anything they did and was probably my graphics card. I agreed it probably wasn't something they did but was very ironic it happened while in there care and they didn't catch it and diagnose it. So it ended there with that shop. Ok here is what i know when windows starts and the windows logo with the black background comes up there are thin black lines through the logo. These lines do not effect the background at all. Then you notice the lines are through some of the artifacts. When i try to play media player there are green lines through the video. I tried going online and playing a youtube video and no lines but after a minute my computer gave the blue screen of death (sorry can't find where i wrote the error down). Anyway since then i have ran diagnostics and it had one error ( error code 0321 unable to detect lcd ). I booted the computer in safe mode and there were no lines through the artifacts. when i uninstall video card drivers the lines go away also. Is this a graphics card issue? I am so fed up with diagnosing this issue. Oh last thing graphics card is ATI MOBILITY RADEON x1400.

Plug in an external monitor and see. If the problem persists then yes, your video card might be failing

cheers ...

yeah forgot to mention that i did plug the laptop to a external monitor and it did indeed have the same issues that i described. whats the possibility that it is full blown video card problem and not a driver or software issue. rate 1 being not video and 10 definitely video card. thanks for your reply.

100%  sure that you have a faulty videocard. Go to some service and ask for reballing to videocard. DO NOT try sollutions offered on youtube, i mean the ones involving hot coins, hot air and reheating chipset. For more information acces my site articles at http://www.doktortelecom.ro/Articole.htm , please use Google translate because the article is in romanian.

Good luck.

PS: I didn't put the link to gain ranking, there is realy helpful info in this article.

I did some research on baking and it looked a lot like the RROD fix on my xbox. I have had success with mine and 2 of my friends so i think i will give baking a shot. I'll let the thread know if it works.

Cool ... remember, stay away from over-baking and not too much spices winknudge.gif

I found a great recipe on NBF. First you must dissect the video card from the case. Then cover your dish with aluminum to seal in the heat. After that add a cup of love and pray you don't over bake it. Pull it out when it's just golden brown and let cool. Season to perfection and viola.

worked great! Everything is back to normal. Thank you guys for helping me make the decision to fix it instead of forking out the dough for a new one. I was sure it was the video card but kept second guessing myself and that's how i ended up here. I didn't know that video cards and fans are alot like in a xbox 360. I have to admit was a little unsure about trying to work on my laptop but it wasn't much different then anything else except it had a higher price tag when i bought it. Lesson learned "go with your gut" and don't hesitate to ask for advice. Thanks again.

It is a hit and miss strategy for sure. Mine lasted me over a year, enough time for me to invest in a new comp smile.gif

Exactly and at least with out a doubt it's the video card. I might find a good deal before it acts up again.
