Graphics slowing down under loads

Thread Starter

Hi all.

I'm new to this forum and I have a problem with my gateway laptop I purchased from Amazon about a month ago.

Everytime I run something that uses gpu processing, it starts out fine. After 30 secs, I start to see it slowing down and lagging a bit. After a minute and 20 seconds, it starts to look like a slideshow and starts to have severe fps drop on anything that shows 3D artifacts.

Iv'e tested it on itunes visualizer. A few demanding 3D games. pcsx2 emulator.

They all come with the same speed and lag after a while. Now, im not a computer expert but, I do know some basics on how the gpu and cpu should perform under loads.

Specs:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

System Name: ID47H07u

Processor: Intel Core i5 2450M (Now, the box says 2430M but my laptop shows 2450M)

Graphics: Intel HD3000 (My brother's Mac has this same sandybridge chip also but, his doesn't lag after long use)

Memory: 4GB DR3 Memory 500gb HDD

Now, Iv'e done research on throttling and tryed out applications that show GPU and CPU frequency. I haven't seen any spikes or signs of sudden downclocking due to heat. Temps usually reach arround 70 cels on gpu and 60 cels on cpu during max load. Right now im bummed that only my laptop has this problem.

Help would really be appreciated. Thank you all

(Iv'e restored my system two times already trying to figure out this problem and tryed possible updates on drivers)

Is there any game patches for the game that you play? What are the apps that currently cause the degradation? Flash up to date? Java up to date?

Also you can't compare the Mac with Windows winknudge.gif Sure they can be of the same specs, but Apple knows how to make everything works together internally.

Thanks for the quick reply qhn.

Yes, patches are regular for any game but, that doesn't fix anything for my problems. I always get FPS drop around the time the fan starts to rev more. It can handle movies very easily. Certain HD movies it can struggle a bit and the fan would turn on.

Iv'e tryed 3D games online just to see if it does the same thing and it lags out when its struggling. the Ps2 emulator slows down after it gets hot while giving me about 20 fps drop. Itunes visualizer makes 3D artifacts also and it lags right after 1min and 20secs. looks like a slide show literally.

I doubt its flash or Java as those auto update and I probaly wouldn't be able to do anything without those plugins for online use.

True, Mac is a different OS. Iv'e looked at a couple of youtube videos to see how the Intel HD 3000M should perform under Windows through gaming and 3D load. One video shows a person playing Dead Space 2 with regular fps on low. His never gained a fps drop for any reason. It's my computer and I think its something wrong with the bios. I can't even disable driver signature enforcement through it.

Online games ... antivirus settings, or different antivirus, maybe? Router, wifi driver?

Yea I tryed games like Last stand ( Dead Zone ), Star Ssonata, Dark Orbit. Its not network lag, atleast I don't think so.

Happens in games that aren't online also.

hmm, I never really remembered installing any real antivirus and infact, I used to think it could be the antivirus causing the problem. Only thing I see on my computer right now is Windows live Essentials.

I think that update came with a antivirus for windows.

Nothing strange about the wifi drivers -

Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)

Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)

Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2

^If that means anything.

Disable all not-currently-used processes and see if any improvements. I use Microsoft Security Essentials as antivirus - small footprint, does the job and free

I would disable processes but, i'm not sure which one Window's is depending on to operate regularly. If I disable the wrong process, I may end up with a crash and I havent done this often before.

Are there any process that I should disable?

Download cCleaner ...

Free, run it, go to extra and start-up ...there you can disable what you want. You can always enable them back. Remember: disable, NOT delete

Ok, So i finally downloaded the Ccleaner and cleaned my registry. I also did what you said and disabled most of the things I felt could use memory.

I tested it and no difference (same slow downs). I saved text files and disabled everything this time. I'm still having the same slow down even clearing and disabling everything.

Seems almost as if its none software related but the software is not aware its a hardware problem either. I really don't know what to do at this point. Maybe some type of interference between both??

Help please

Let's try this:

1) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa645516%28v=VS.71%29.aspx
This is to monitor which process is eating CPU cycle

2) verify / update DirectX

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I was bit busy with something else.

Figured out that this problem is with most Intel chips and sometimes can't be prevented. Some of them would even give out false output during downclock. I checked the system processes and DirectX. Nothing strange there and I was up to date.

Intel cards really are terrible and I will stay away from them next time im buying a laptop. AMD is recommended over them for smoother graphics.

Guess I can't do nothing at this point but, the help was much apprecciated.

Thanks qhn

Search around, maybe you can push the Intel chip a bit more smile.gif
