Inspiron 1720, Receive = 54 Mbps?

Inspiron 1720, 4 Gb mem, win 7x64, Netgear 3700 dual rate router, Intel wifi 4965 wireless link. Since I really like this machine, but it's getting long in the tooth, I've been checking on ways to make it run a little faster with more oomph. I can now add a Truemobile 355 Blue Tooth module, and upgrade the mem to 6 Gb. I then decided to check out the link to see if it had been upgraded in the last five years. At Amazon, I found an ad for a "NEXT-GEN" link that speeds along at 300Mbps. So, I decided to look at my PRO-SET drivers and utility and was startled to see under: Intel Advanced Statistics>Transmit/Receive>Total Host Packets (Directed and Not) that the max was 54 Mbps. Yikes, was the link only working at 802.11g? I rechecked the router and yes, the network was pooping along at 5 Mbps like it should. So,

1. Is the link advertised on Amazon (type in Intel wifi 4965 link) an upgrade on the original link that came with the laptop?

2. If it is not an upgrade, why is my receive rate only 54 Mbps?

Thanx in advance
Chuck

You can try updating your wireless card driver, force the router to run in only N mode and see if the communication stays above 54 Mbps.

Windows and the router determine which speed is stable for both of them to work on otherwise

cheers ...
