Copper shims in a Acer aspire 5551-2036

It's 75*F in my room.Even  with a hvb fan on high running towards the laptop 2ft away it runs 49*C 10% cpu load.Without hvb on it,runs 56*C just on idle.I use arctic silver 5.I cleaned my laptop right after I bought it used. The thermal pad on gpu crusted off.I just touched it & it crumbled like burnt paper.I have had this for a year now.Last two times I put new thermal on it has ran hotter then usual.I got a couple pennies sanded down &polished. Not real good though, lincoln still has outline & some scratches still visible.I also have a copper heatsink I pulled from a blown desktop amp. It's very thin, easy to bend & can probably make at least 2 shims from it.

I never tried this mod.Any advice before I do this?I can take pics if needed. This laptop has been very good & I am keeping it till the mobo putters out,if it ever does lol.I got it for $50 on my birthday :)

Sure, it's safe to copper-shim in between the CPU and the heat sink. Just try not to over tighten the screws when you put them back

Make sure the fan is clean and the bit between the fan and heatsink - on a lot of designs, dust build up here and forms a 'carpet' and the cooling system fails.. If the fan is running slightly off it may need replacing, you can usually tell this by the noise or the fan blades don't spin easily...

I did it today.I ran it for 30 mins before realized I didn't put any thermal on top of the shims. It was running  46-50,didn't get any higher. After I put some on the tops, its very high now.28 mins in,running 89-90azz.gif.I either put to much or lil thernal,or i didn't need to put any on the tops.I used size of grain of rice like usual.Ughh! I disassembled n reassembled 3 times past few hrs lol

You don't need to put thermal paste on both sides of the shim smile.gif

Thanks for the replies guys!I am so lucky, you're not going to believe this.I fell asleep for 7hrs with it runningshocked.gif.It was ok,still running 90*C though.Got a cup of coffee & took laptop apart. The fan was unplugged the whole timeomgwtf.gif.Can't believe my laptop didn't fry up,forgot to plug it back in after putting thermal on top of shims..

I just plugged the fan back in & put laptop back together.Left thermal how it was.Played a 1080p video for 10-15mins.Temp max is 51*C!Never had it run that cool on 1080 vids on fresh thermal.I put shims on gpu & sb cause the gaps were equal, left cpu shimless.Spent awhile studying the gpu & sb gaps.I cut the shims down that far to prevent a possible short.Didn't want them out much further then the dyes.

So glad it didn't fry, this laptop is a champ!
