Question about replacing DC port on Samsung R540

I had to send off my Samsung R540 laptop for repair last month as the pin in the DC port had become worn out due to it being too thin for the AC adapter to attach properly.

I was quoted nearly £300 to fix the problem as supposedly the DC jack was soldered onto the motherboard instead of being plugged in and as a result, it needed the replacement of the entire motherboard!

I was wondering if the motherboard really needs replacing as it's a bit extreme having to replace it just because the pin in the DC port is worn out.

I wish I can be near by, $300 is a lot of beer tongue.gif

Get yourself a jack, few bucks at the most, solder it in yourself, or take the motherboard out and take the whole thing to someone who can solder the jack in for you - for a few beers winknudge.gif

By the way, if you are lucky, your model might come with the whole jack assembly, meaning it is not really soldered on, by like a cable connector to the board

I knew I was right when I was quoted that price from the supplier.

Basically, I got the laptop for free back in 2010 when I was doing a course at university (I'm officially classed as disabled due to my epilepsy so the student finance people said that I was eligible for various equipment including a new laptop)

For the most part, it's served me pretty well except for the problem with the DC jack not being as good as it could be unlike the ones in my other two laptops (which I'll be fixing up next year with new hard drives and memory amongst other things) which connect perfectly to the AC adapter.

Would you say it's pretty easy to remove the original DC jack and solder the new one (I have a soldering iron at home) or would it be easier to take it to a specialist and have it done there.

A steady hand and a good soldering tip will do you fine. Take it apart and decide for yourself if you want to tackle the task, either way you would save money on having specialists tearing apart your comp tongue.gif

I've decided that I don't want to risk burning my flat down if I try to solder the jack itself, so I'll get someone else to do it and hopefully get it done for a reasonable price and have it returned within 2-3 days.
