Hard drive was split when i bought

I got the k53e from bestbuy about 2months ago...I like it but th internal hard drive is bothering me now.OS(C;) 186gb and Data (D;) 254 gb.....why would they split this up? There a way to fix this without have to use a external to back everything up and redo it all or?

Before doing anything - create recovery disks first!

Then you can use some free disk manager like EaSUS to merge the partitions
