Just got my Acer 8003LMI - Page 2

Cannot find any information on ATI site regarding the different clock speeds.

I took a read through the compal cl56 and voodoo.

Just to clarify it in my own mind:

1.Are we saying ATI ship different clocked 9700 cards to different OEMs? - Without ATI acknowledging different models on their own site?

2. Or are the cards all the same and the OEM is clocking them down /up ?

3. How is it known that Acer will ship their notebooks with low clocked 9700's and if they do as no one has got a Ferrari 3200 or 8006 will these 2 machines be any different?

it just hit me, maybe I had the lowest end ATI 9700 on my compal that's why it wouldn't overclock and I thought it was defective. mine was chembook btw. anyone else got one?

I dont think ATI ships out different variants of the 9700 w/o acknowledging them.

We see a difference in default core/mem and oc core/mem because of each notebook maufactures thermal design and power output...

i dont think ati is using "bad stock, good stock" here... not for the basic 9700 at least... maybe for a 9700 turbo in the future...

everyone else who got the compalcl56 had its default core/mem was around 390-400 / 200

i couldnt overclock past 7% with atitool then I tried it with powerstrip and got all the way up to 475/250 b4 i hit an artifact barrier

my 3339 3dmark03 score was @ 471/246

I'd really like to some detailed pictures of this laptop, and some benchmarks (Sysmark04, 3dMark01 and 03, etc) run on it.

Also some gaming benchmarks like UT2k3 or Splinter Cell would be nice to see too.

Thanks for the information so far though.

The 8003LMI since that is what this thread was intended to be about....

Thanks for the specs you sent me via PM though rincewind.

info for oc's: you do not have to buy rincewinds Compal CL56 (by the way also a low-end config in default)... you can also oc the Radeon9700 in the TM 800x Series... i often read about 460/2xx values for the book, w/o any problems (and no artifacts)... but no guarantee for that maybe there is a good reason for acer and compal to leave the settings low

getting back to the hard drive thing: since PCTorque's website and your invoice said that the comp would have a 5400 rpm drive, you are entitled to this or you can return it. PC Torque made a typo when they said it would be a 5400 and they have corrected this recently. I would talk to them and say that you want an upgrade to a 5400 drive or else you will return the notebook. They might be willing to spend the $150 or so for the drive in order to not lose a $2300 sale

Adam at PCTorque has been very helpful with the HD issue. They are shipping me the GAX version (5400 RPM with 16 MB buffer) of the Toshiba HD that ships with the 8003lmi. I decided to just swap the HD myself and save shipping the whole notebook back to PCTorque. I have not got the HD yet, but I have been told it has shipped. I'll post an update once the new HD is installed.

I just got my Acer 8003Lmi back from PC Torque with a swapped Toshiba GAX 5400rpm. It is noticeably faster BUT it is also noticeably noisier. The 4200 rpm was essentially silent. I suppose I will get used to it, but my heart sank a little when I first heard the noise. You might want to consider what is more important to you before changing the drive.

I have just installed the GAX HD, but I have not really noticed any increased noise or heat. We'll see as I install more applications and games.

like i said in another thread:

i really think the slow harddisk is not a mistake but a feature for businessmen slow but silent is better than fast and loud... so they took a quite but slow disk.

just my opinion.
