Eee 901 (Ubuntu) needs upgrades installed

I have an Eee 901 (Ubuntu) that needs about 300 upgrades installed. I cannot make this happen. Is it time for a restore?

Also, is it worth sticking a huge ssd card into the slot, or have users found 16GB sufficient?

Which version of Ubuntu? What exactly are the upgrades all about?

QHN,

My present version of Ubuntu is:
Eeebuntu, Ubuntu 8.10, is what is presently running.
suggested updates include:
acpid
apport
apport.gtk
apt
apt.utils
and so on for over three hundred lines and almost 300 megabytes.

The previous owner is a good friend who believed himself a Linux person, but I remain skeptical. He gave me the device when he got a new one. I used the Internet to find out how to get into the machine. I had the previous owner's password and username, so getting in wasn't difficult. He asked me to delete his stuff when I turned it on. He had no licensed software, only flc music player and open office 3. I have already been to the local Public Library to use the wi-fi, and that works excellently.

I see. Well, you can try backing up personal data and perform a clean Ubuntu installation with the latest version.

cheers ...
