I am planning to purchase a laptop in India and I have given the requirements below:
I will be using the laptop for memory intense simulations and visualization, and mostly be using MATLAB/Octave, Python and R etc. The simulations might run for 2-3 hours continuously.
I also plan to make it dual boot with Windows 7 and Linux. I am not a gamer and will never do any gaming. I have some basic questions.
1. I am interested in i5 or i7 3rd generation). Will there be performance difference between i5 and i7 for the tasks I have listed?
2. Is a dedicated graphics required for my tasks or can I accomplish them with an integrated graphics card?
3. Are there any drawbacks with going for a dedicated graphics (battery life, processor performance)?
4. Will 500 GB of hard disk sufficient since I might partition the drive for dual boot?
I did some research and have come up with the following two laptops (I am open to other laptops as well)
Samsung Series 5 NP550P5C-S02IN: http://www.flipkart.com/samsung-series-5-np550p5c-s02in-3rd-gen-ci7-8gb-1tb-2gb-graphics-win-7-hp/p/itmdbe8f4ppxcskn?pid=COMDBE7GZZEDVC6C&ref=8e03c793-33c5-40af-861b-3134be5d4649
Sony VAIO SVE14117GNB: http://www.flipkart.com/sony-vaio-sve14117gnb-laptop-3rd-gen-ci7-4gb-500gb-win7-prof/p/itmdatb5y7rzhsbr?pid=COMDATB5AFQN2MHB&ref=d5d0377d-7317-45a4-8c6f-bf9a00e6ea45
This Sony VAIO is the only laptop I am finding with i7 no dedicated graphics. This also comes with Windows 7 professional as against Home Premium from Samsung.
Could you guys please guide on choosing the right laptop? I am open to exploring other brands but apprehensive about HP (due to heating issues) and DELL (low battery life of 15R).
Thank you.
Ravi
