CPU, BEEP Issue... Help

Thread Starter

Bought a refurb laptop its the acer aspire v3-771g  it was a solid deal and understand the risk of refurb.  But let's cut to chase.

It has the i7-2670QM processor.  I am finding out that it will beep and then stop charging, screen dims and then comes back to normal (all that in just 1-2 seconds).  This occurs when the CPU hits max speed.  So one thing i did was make cpu max slate 99% and this solved issue so to speak... BUT I want to know how I can just get rid of beep and such and leave it at 100%  Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it??

Leave the battery out and see how it works with just ac adapter

I hope someone has a better way to fix this?

Did you try what was being suggested above? if that works then it should turn off your laptop and the culprit could be the ac adapter

System spikes up to 100% now and then and it is normal. We are just trying to trouble-shoot. Hopefully someone might have the same issue that you have and can dive in with the exact diagnostic

no it doesn't randomly spike it will spike during loads and such not randomly sorry.

I recommend reviewing the task-manager and see which process or processes that causes the spike. You might want to go through and disabling un-needed start-up processes and services. Updating the BIOS if there is a newer version can be a good idea also.

Acer Power Management - make sure that you have the correct version running. Try these steps out and see if they help

all up to date and it still does it.  It starts doing it during Guild Wars 2 when the cpu is being used a lot

I wonder if overheating causing the beeping ... Want to try taking the machine apart, reviewing and applying new (better) thermal paste? You mentioned that this is a refurbished system.

No overheating issue i been watching that.  The best way for me to explain what is happening is when the cpu hits its max like during a game it the speed will bounce around and when it hits that 3.1 that is when it beeps and "trips" not really trips but the charge thing happens.  then when it is off of 3.1 it goes back.  so when I make it max 99% rather then 100% it never happens.

What are the 4 digits code behind your V3-771G?

One more question ... is this Guild Was game the only thing that causes the beep and trips? Or just anything that makes the system CPU spiking to 100% would cause the issue?

No anything that causes CPU to hit max
I will search for more ideas, and hopefully some other members can chime in. But to be honest, making noise and charge tripping when system running at 100% is not a good sign. Trying to keep the system at 99% is not a good long term solution. If the system is still under warranty I recommend calling in for replacement.

On desktops, the cause can always be traced back to overheating. Not sure yet on notebooks, first time I heard this

Sounds good! I also want to add that there appears to be update for power management but it won't let me update. says wrong version or not supporters when I got it off Acer for this laptop...

just want to add some more info.  I had the turbo boost management when the beep and "trip" happened except this time it didn't come back to charging mode.  so I minimized guild wars 2 and when I do that the start menu was up as well.  THIS is when it began to beep consistently with a little time in between maybe 2-3 seconds then go again.  i watched the turbo boost and it was not at max.  but i did see that the engery saver leaf was coming on and off with the beep and also see that the start up menu "shut down" button was going from normal to administrative icon on and off next to it... so I went into power again and made it 99 and it was "fixed"... lol

here's my convo with acer... not sure I believe it yet..

Vignesh RB: Hi, my name is Vignesh RB. How may I help you?
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Hi, Andrew.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: Hi
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: How are you doing today?
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: I am having an issue with my laptop and have been trying to solve and can not..
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: I will try to explain it the best I can so bare with me
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, for better understanding, may I know the exact issue you face with your Notebook?
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Please proceed.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: I am waiting for your response.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: When under CPU and Graphic demanding situations for example Guild Wars 2.  The computer will beep then dim the screen, with say it's not charging and then come back to normal
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: Now one way I have gotten around this is I go into power management and set CPU max slate at 99% and it NEVER happens but when it is at 100% it will occue
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: occur*
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, I understand that the computer will not take charge when you play games in it. Correct?
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: no
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: it will just cut out for a second or two
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: then come back
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: and it will do this off and on sometimes 30seconds in between sometimes 1 minute
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: but when I am not gaming or under a high CPU usage I have no issue
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: The Notebook does this only when you play game in it. Correct?
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: Usually is during games but have had it happen when under high CPU usuage
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, I will help you in the right direction.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: heating is not an issue tho.  It will happen right away during the game there is no way the CPU got that hot that fast
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: I understand.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: This will happen when the game interface occupies the CPU space and there are no trouble shooting steps to prevent this.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, the game which are playing in your Notebook has high graphics part and that may require more graphic card performance.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: the game is performing great there are no issues with the game.  I don't get why this issue happens when the cpu max slate is 100% and wont when its 99%
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: In this case, you can either contact the game developer support or the Answers by fee based support through 8775264466.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: that sort of proves your theory wrong
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Even if it is an computer, when the work load goes high the performance of the computer will go low.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: Right.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: But
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: why is there NO issue when max slate is 99% ?
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: It is not that it will stop working, it will work but it will take some more time to finish the assigned job.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, the computer memory is not full at least it has 1% to breath. When the total space is occupied it will not have space to run the assigned job.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: I do agree with your point, there is not a huge difference between 99% and 100%. But, in this case it makes a huge difference in performance basis.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: The laptop has i7-2670 quad core with 8 gigs of memory and 2 gigs on graphics card.... how can there be this issue?!
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: I mean I see what your saying but feel that it shouldn't have a problem with these specs is all...
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: I understand that, even if it has 8GB of memory the game occupies the whole RAM space and that will cause the issue.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: hmm ok well I guess I am glad this is not a big issue.  Yet a little upset I have to set it at 99%
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, the Notebook will not run the entire games memory. I believe that the game will be of 2 GB , but the RAM will run only with the 8 GB of space it has got.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: I do understand your concern, as a customer even I will feel the same.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: To conclude, we have provided you information regarding CPU utilization and this should help you fix the issue. If there are no additional questions on this topic, I will close the chat session.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: I have one more
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Please proceed.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: I am waiting for your response.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: so this is COMPLETELY normal and there are no issues at all?  Right now laptop is under warranty but if I have an issue that is based around this after warranty I will not be happy... I also will be saving this conversation to back me up in proving I tried to have it fixed right now.
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: If your willing to say everything is ok and I should leave it at 99% that I will trust you and go on my way
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, I understand your concern and I completely agree with this.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: For your security I will send a copy of this chat transcript to abenak89@gmail.com
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: perfect! thank you!
chat_enduser_message.pngAndrew Benak: that is all I have for you ha just am glad its not a big issue
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: It is my pleasure assisting you and your satisfaction is my primary concern.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Andrew, it was pleasure assisting you today. I appreciate the patience you presented while we worked together on this issue. May health and happiness be yours in all seasons.
chat_agent.pngVignesh RB: Thank you for contacting Acer live chat support.

Sounded like a car dealer saying don't you drive to the speed shown on the speedometer. Buying a laptop and worrying about hitting 100% on CPU - that CPU could be bad for all we know. CPU are made to be able to be pushed up to 125% (and more) in the Overclocking world, why would a brand new CPU got chocked at 99%? Showing maybe something is wrong with the hardware environment.

If other V3-771g owners are not having the same issue like you do, then something ain't right. CPU spike of 100% could cause a bit of a delay in some process, but not screen dimming and tripping charging which are hardware related!
Post#15 above, issue with updating Acer Power Management. You want to try this?
- back up your personal data
- perform a clean system installation with all acer utilities for your model from Acer support

cheers ...
