Three ProBook 4710s, all with bad CPUs???

Hi Everyone and Happy Friday!!!

I am an IT Managed Services Technician for a local company and have run into an odd situationwith one of our clients. In the past month, I have received complaints on two 4710s that were running very sluggishly. I got the machines back to the shop and ran the normal spyware/malware clean up, defragged hard drives, and all the normal laptop maintenance. Both still ran terrible.

I then suppected a possible hardware issue so I ran the HP Vision Diagnostics 2.9.1 and they both failed the processor speed test. I thought this was a bit odd because I have so rarely seen a bad CPU.

The other day I got another 4710s with a failed hard drive. I replaced the drive and reloaded it with XP. This one as well after the fresh reload is running terribly. I ran the Vision Diagnostics and this one reports a bad CPU, failing the CPU speed test as well. I am having a difficult time believeing that I have three laptop with the same issue.

I did some reseach online and found somemention of these models being suceptible to overheating so I opened them all up, cleaned out the cases, fans and heatsinks. Cleaned the CPUs and heatsinks with isopropyl and applied fresh thermal compund. It had no efect on the machines at all.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Do I really have three machines with all the same issue? Any information or opinions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone and have a great weekend!

Respectfully,
George D.

Can you expand a bit more about sluggish running? Certain apps, under load?

It is very sluggish all the time. Clicking on Start, it sometimes take 5-10 seconds for the list to appear. Opening My Computer can take up to 30 seconds. Just about anything you ask it to do. Even the freshly load machine with only XP and drivers installed. No other software even installed.

Just for kick ... would the same sluggishness happen in Safe Mode?

Would you also try running the comps in battery mode alone, in ac mode alone ... and observe the performance on these 2 instances?

cheers ...
