Hp Pavillion Dv9925Nr Bios Update Fail - Won't Start

Thread Starter

Hello,

Before anything else, this is my first post here so I ask the moderators to please move this thread in case I have not posted in the correct area. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Now, for the problem. I have a HP Pavillion dv9925nr notebook. Yesterday I made a BIOS update , because I saw that HP recommended it. The update was done to F.34, the latest they have posted on their site. I have to mention here that I have done another BIOS update 2 years ago , I think, and it went just fine.

After yesterdays update the computer wouldn't start.
I have to mention that I've read since yesterday a lot of topics regarding this problem, here and on other forums, the reason I am asking is that none apply to the specific behavior of my computer.

After the BIOS update, a dialog prompted and said the computer will now shut down. Not restart, shut down. Now, windows did indeed shut down , but the computer didn't. It started making the one long beep two short beeps pattern and the CAPS LOCK light blinking. If I tried to stop it using the power button it would's stop but it just turned on by itself again. The only way to stop it was taking out the battery.

The specific (weird ) behavior is that, if it has the power chord in, it won't start despite me pushing the power button. If I put the battery in ( power chord or not ) it will turn on by itself displaying the beep pattern. Blank screen.

I have to mention some other problems I have had with it. It had the infamous black screen problem. But it was manageable , in the sense that if I opened the lid at a angle lower than 45 degrees it will light up and would not have problems with it until the next reboot. Also, it always worked on an external display so I just assumed that the Nvidia Chip was not at fault.

If anyone has any ideas , I would be most thankful. I really need to fix it since I have some very important files on the HDD that I will be needing at school.

1. Your hard drive is still accessible, you only need to put it an external housing.

2. We have in the forum here many tips and guides about "blind flashing" - Go through the thread and create a bootable floppy disk or USB stick, and follow the instruction as how to flash your BIOS back to previous version

Good luck

cheers ...

1. I don't understand what that means. Why should I put it in an external housing?

2. I know there are many tips on blind flashing, the thing is, it doesn't work for me , because:

                   a. the computer starts by itself when on battery. if I stop it it will just start again.

                   b. it will not start without the battery, no matter waht key combinations I press.

1. In case your notebook is "dead" from the BIOS flash, and you want to recover your files

2. headscratch.gif Try removing ram modules, hard drive, anything that you can remove easily without taking the whole system apart ... then press and hold the power button for about 30-40 secs.

cheers ...

1. Oh, yes, of course, I taught you meant it was somehow important to the BIOS recovery.

2. I did that, but I'm gonna do it again, just in case.

Something else happened. I heated up the motherboard, around the nvidia chipset and now it doesn't make the one long 2 short beeps pattern.

2. Not sure what to think about this. From a bad BIOS flash?

If you have done the other removals and still no go, might want to go to the next step as to remove the CMOS battery and trying resetting the BIOS itself next

cheers ...

Yes. HP suggested I should update my BIOS so I did. The problem is that the one listed on their website as being for my model is most surely not.

There's another thing. The caps lock light blinks 6 times, and on the HP website they say that that means BIOS authentification failiure. And they say that I should :" Restore BIOS from onboard backup (jumpers) " . But I can't really find any clue as to where these jumpers are.

I am not sure that you can find the jumpers on notebooks, in general. This is a known issue with HP BIOS update on many models, it is very disappointing that they haven't figured out how to offer a safe BIOS update.

Like I said, you can try removing the CMOS battery and hope to reset the BIOS, try the blind flashing with a floppy disk. Many users mentioned about replacing ram modules (don't ask me why) and swear that it worked headscratch.gif

Yeah, I removed the ram modules, CMOS battery, even the antenna from the WIFI card, and pressed the power button to drain capacitors. Put everything back together, doesn't start anymore :( At all, nothing.

Give the blind flash a chance/try Adelina

I would gladly give anything a try, but as I said, it won't turn on anymore after CMOS reset. Nothing, no lights , no fan no nothing, except the LED where the power chord goes in.

Understood. But it is possible that at power button pressed, the board system would look for a workable microcode to work. So give the floppy disk with the BIOS Rom a shot, see if it can (or try) to access that floppy drive.

If you google BIOS restore for HP laptops, you'll find all manner of resources and information for the purpose. In a nutshell, though:

You'll need either a USB memory key or a USB flash drive and software that will be used by the system to burn the recovery BIOS to the system's CMOS chip for the BIOS. There's one out there that I recall called the Crisis Recovery Disk, but that's just one... In either event, you'll need a PREVIOUS version of the BIOS, preferably the very last one before the one you tried to update to.

Follow the guide for that and you may be lucky enough to recover the BIOS. However, if the BIOS is NOT the problem (and if the bake session went badly the board itself may just be toast, pardon the pun), then the most likely fix is going to be just to replace the motherboard or buy a new laptop.

I personally haven't had much luck with emergency BIOS restores... Generally my systems are DEAD when they hit the phase you're in, but you may have better luck. If not, it shouldn't be too hard to locate a replacement motherboard if you opt to try that. Just be sure you match up the right type for your system (AMD processor, non-discrete graphics according to HP's info for the DV9925NR) as there are lots of Intel boards as well and any board with discrete graphics requires a slightly different cooling assembly.

Hope that helps at least a bit.
