Problem: startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically

Thread Starter

I have an Acer Aspire One with Windows 7 Enterprise. Today I installed Flex Type on it and it totally freaked out on restart starting by itself some Startup repair tool, which wasn't able to fix the problem and showed the message above: "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically". I've tried other tools (System restore and System image recovery, but I don't have an image of the system). I also tried Windows memory diagnostic, which didn't help. I've written some commands I've seen on forums in the Command prompt window, too. All the same... The computer kept on showing me Startup repair on every try and restart and I'm not able to access its normal condition. Did anybody have the same problem? Please, give me some advice how I can fix it without reinstallation. Thanks :)

Would you able to get into the repair window dialog and choose the command prompt option?

Nice ...

Now type bootrec.exe and press Enter.

This will rebuild the boot configuration data and hopefully fix your problem. You can also run the command with switches to fix just the master boot record (/fixmbr), the boot sector (/fixboot), or rebuild the entire BCD (/rebuildbcd)

Good luck.

I've tried all these commands, but sadly they didn't help, although there was a message that it was a successful operation. Thank you for the suggestion. Do you have some other option in mind that might do it? There's no problem if every file or information on the notebook gets lost. I just want to start it running normally.

Oh, I used these commands from some online textbook:

  • bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
  • c:
  • cd boot
  • attrib bcd -s -h -r
  • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
  • bootrec /RebuildBcd

And for now it's working properly again :) Sorry for the bothering. Have a nice day :)

Looking like you did pretty much everything that it needed to be performed. Do you have access to an optical drive and try booting up with an installation CD and do the repair from there?

And if that does not work, it's time to hunker down and reinstalling a clean OS environment. Might want to take out the drive, put it in an external housing and saving your personal files

cheers ...
