Hello

I have the above laptop and i have been trying to play audio cassettes by plugging  in a lead into the line in input

No matter what i have tried i can't produce any sound at all.

When i right click the volume mixer, playback devices says, line in,is not plugged in, I have searched around for an answer no luck so far.

Also in the voume mixer the speakers are ticked as working.

Can anyone help...Thank you

You are tying to use the notebook speakers as external speakers for your audio devices?

What is your OS version?

Hello,

Thank you for your reply, the operating system on the laptop is Vista premium and yes I am expecting the sound to play from the laptop speakers my eventual aim is the record the tapes onto Cd's

Try updating your audio device driver, then making sure that you check the show disabled devices in the playback tab on sound properties. Many notebook sound cards do not support "Stereo Mix" - review your model manual first

Thank you QHN,

Sorry for the late reply, I have tried the update for the drivers, they are OK.

I could not Check Show disabled devices as i can't find the sound properties dialog box,

nor could i understand why in the Sound dialog box recording it says "Line in not plugged in.

I can't find the answer to that either.

The only reason for wanting laptop to play the cassettes is so i can make a selection of the ones i want to keep.

I have no means now of playing the cassettes other than an old "Realistic player only unit" that only has two phono outlets

and no headphone jack.

Thank you for your help much appreciated.

Amazon (and others on the net) offers these "USB Portable Cassette Tape-to-MP3 Player Adapter with USB Cable and Software" for cheap. That is what I use to get my cassettes to MP3 format.

What you have now, you would need a hardware converter of some sort, much more expensive and loads of headache
