Elan Pointing Device: Need To Replace

Hi All,

Have a Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6642 and, overall, am very pleased with it. However, the Elan pointing device is driving me crazy: too sensitive, jumps around randomly (both the cursor and scrolling position), and overall takes much more effort to use than does my other laptops that use Synapatics.

Is there a way to replace Elan with Synaptics or something similar? I just need basic functions: scroll and tap. Do not want nor need to rotate, zoom, etc. from the pad. (In the market for a Windows 8 touch screen laptop and, though Acer has some nice offerings, will pass and go with Lenovo or Asus if I can't solve this problem.)

(I believe I have tried most custom settings, just have not been able to achieve my goal of just the most basic of functions.)

Thanks!

How about just remove the Elan driver and use OS generic drvier instead?

Forgot to thank you for the answer. Unfortunately, that did not work. Tried TouchFreeze, etc, but to no avail. Must admit to really, really, really disliking Windows 8. I also blame the computer vendors for kowtowing to Microsofts hardware demands: makes NO sense to have a touchscreen PC that comes with duplicate 'features' on a touchpad.

Same problem with my Asus S400CA: worthless touchpad: cursor jumps around randomly, etc., etc. Hey, PC makers and Microsoft, not everyone is a gamer. (Hating Windows 8 so much, I reverted back to Vista on my Dell Inspiron!)

Yep. Touchpad cursor jumping is quite a pain. Happening to pretty everyone at one time or the other on any models sad.gif

Best is to try with different mouse and pad properties settings and see which one would work to minimize the jumping around

cheers ...
