Inspiron 640m - Use the microphone input as earphone output

Hi guys,

My Inspiron 640m's earphones output has become gradually looser over the years, and now it's not working anymore. I tried disassembling the laptop to try and fix it with no success. It is a problem for me since I mostly use earphones when I'm using it.

A possible solution to that would be to reconfigure my laptop so that the microphone input can be used as a phones output. I'm pretty sure it is feasible, since when I connect earphones in it while music is playing, I'll be able to hear the music through the earphones for a split-second before I get a popup asking me if I want to use the port as a line in or for a microphone. I think it supports stereo playback as well since I could hear tell the difference between the left and right channels.

I looked for Sigmatel Audio drivers and got the latest ones, but I couldn't find a way to reconfigure the ports.

Does anyone know how to achieve that?

Thanks in advance,

I already have one, but it takes a lot of space and it's not handy when I have to carry my laptop around at school and such...

Many Inspiron come with an Audio Jack Board, a $40 part that can be replaced. Take a look at your board and see if there is such thing

Mine's are soldered directly on the motherboard :(

Ouch! Any way just to remove (unsolder) the jack itself and replacing it?

I actually intended to resolder it at first, but I think the pins may be a bit too small for my level of expertise. If you take a look at the link I provided, you can see the ports on the left side. The other thing is that the underside of the motherboard has a layer of black plastic glued to it, and I don't know if removing it may be harmful for my laptop.

That's an easy ding smile.gif The glued plastic can be peeled off nicely, carefully and then put it back after finish. We do this all the time when we bake the board winknudge.gif

Those parts can be had for a few bucks. Really. Turn the board upside down, soldering tip hot enough and just tug the jack out nicely. Use a table-working magnifying glass like this one ...

If anyone knows how to make the microphone input an earphone output though, feel free to share!
