GW 7422GX / E-m6811 Windows 8 video drivers.

Ok I decided to see if these aged troopers were up for the challenge so I put some new dresses on them. (1) Linux Mint 13/14 and (2) Windows 8.

Regarding the one with Windows 8 :

Windows 8 runs well on this processor with just 1.5 Gig of ram. The problem that I am putting to the community is how can I force the Catalyst Video drivers instead of the Windows default driver.

I have tried to go back and get the retro Catalyst drivers but Windows 8 will not let me install them.

The Windows 8 drivers are generic and the text is not as sharp as I remember when this machine ran Windows XP.

I do have to say that I am impressed with the performance as it appears to be better than XP or Vista. ( I did not move this machine to 7 )

Any suggestions would be great!

Windows 8 ... I haven't thought about it. My M6805 runs very well with W7 Ultimate 64bits.

Can you install the GPU driver (from Vista or XP) under compatibility mode? Or even just copying the GPU folder over and use manual driver update process?

cheers ...

I will wait a week to see if any suggestions come up and then I may give that a try.

When I tried Win8, there were no Mobility Radeon 9600 drivers available at all AFAIR. With Win7 I was using the ones that come in off of Windows Update but it seems nobody has don that for Win8 and yeah Win8 is even more restrictive about unsigned driver installs.

I've actually got XP on my 6805. It's fastest on here and the drivers are easy to find.

With the age of these machines, I would recommend moving them over to Linux. Mint and Ubuntu would be my two choices. Mint is based on Ubuntu and is a bit cleaner and easy on the video card.

I have 2 drives - XP and Linux - ready. Currently using XP, seems to be fine. Will see what happens next year once XP drops out of the radar from Microsoft winknudge.gif

I gave Win8 a try again on my 6805 and I did get Radeon 9600 video drivers working but one must manually install Win7 drivers and this is somewhat complicated.

This guide works.
