Acer Aspire 7736G - Broken Motherboard

Thread Starter

About a month ago my Acer Aspire 7736G notebook suddenly decided to shut off on me whilst gaming. After many attempts trying to get it to start, I finally concluded the motherboard was bust. sad.gif

The only problem now is what should I do? I have loads of important data on that notebook and I can't just toss it aside. I've tried looking for broken or defective 7736Gs to salvage the motherboard from but haven't managed to prevail, and I've been informed the local computer repair store doesn't replace notebook motherboards. azz.gif

Any advice?

You should be able to take the hard drive out, put it in an external USB housing and access your personal data from there. Look for a main-board and try replacing it your self. It's not that hard winknudge.gif

Thanks. Where would be the best place to look for a replacement board? I've tried Amazon and eBay, but I've only ever come across one and it also wasn't working. azz.gif

eBay can be a good source, but be careful with sellers reputation first. Try this place also, one of many, I just picked it off the search list from "Acer Aspire 7736G motherboards"

Thanks so much for your help. I believe the reason the motherboard died in the first place was because the laptop kept overheating. Would drilling some holes in the tiny little air vents be a good idea?

Edit: It says the motherboard doesn't include CPU or memory. Would I be able to take the CPU and memory from the old Motherboard and install it onto the new one?

Drilling of holes......no..........keeping it clean inside yes and also after a year or so (if you are gaming alot, replace the thermal paste, following the instructions

Have you tried:
A) Powering it yup without a battery installed
B) Powering it up with no hard drive installed
C) Powering it up with 1 stick of RAM
D) Removing the AC and battery then holding the Power Button down for thirty seconds
E) Opening it up and if you can cleaning the CPU/GPU/chipset heatsink and fan out, replacing any thermal paste/gum with new stuff and reseating the CPU
F) Looking at a repair shop that repairs motherboards - if the GPU or chipset has stopped functioning, a professional reflow may resolve the issue

I've tried A) and D), and I'm certain it is a motherboard issue. The only problem I have now is unscrewing the base; last time I tried I couldn't find a screwdriver the right size. Is anyone aware of which screwdriver I'll need to open up the base of an Acer Aspire 7736g?

You just need a small phillips screw driver. Acer doesn't use any other type of screw, unlees the laptop has been split apart before and the tech has used the wrong screws...

We had a technician look at at in the middle of 2011, to back up the hard drive and reinstall Windows 7, but I don't think that should be a problem.

I must mention I've had this laptop for around three years. What is the best brand of thermal paste, and where can I buy it from?

Arctic Silver 5 and you should be able to pick it up at most places that sell laptops or places on line like Newegg.com..follow directions for application..in this case, more is not better
