Watching videos problem...

Everytime I try to watch some videos saved on a external hdd I have hooked up to my laptop the video keeps freezing up on me, almost like its a scratched up dvd. I've check the task manager to see the processes and cpu and memory usage and everything looks fine. I'm using a Toshiba satellite laptop with 4gb ram and running windows 8. Does anyone know what could be the possible reason for the freezing up and glitches? Thanks!

I only use VLC bc I found it does the most and is the most compatible with all media files. Its weird bc it only does it every once in a while and not everytime I watch a movie.

Once in a while with the same video, or once in a while with different video? Tried using Windows 8 built-in media player?

Haven't tried it yet but I can watch the same movie twice and one time it'll play perfectly and the next it'll mess up on me. Then if I'm watching one movie and it messes up I could start a different one and it could play just fine.

Review codecs, update Windows 8. Could be that downloaded video files are not clean. Run a defrag
