Missing explorer.exe (??)

Acer Aspire 5734z Win 7

Long story, short (as possible).  I have been dealing with BSOD and have removed the malware BUT, I still don't have an operable screen. The registry Winlogin shell states explorer.exe but, upon reviewing the Windows folder , I have noticed that I no longer have a stand alone explorer.exe file (if there was one to begin with).  I suspect what happened was the malware removed it.  Anyway, I am obviously needing to get a hold of another explorer.exe file to put back into the folder, so how should one go about doing that - using any old exe file from another Acer??  I don't want to attempt a factory default, just yet!

Any help appreciated. TIA.

If you have a Windows 7 disc, you can choose to repair the operating system, which should reinstall explorer

Thanks for the quick reply Djembe.

The OS was preinstalled on the laptop and btmk, it didn't come with b/u discs.  I'm just getting soo frustrated at this and banging my head against the wall!!

I take it that you never made back up disks either..If you have the backup partition still available...you can do a full restore back to day one..of course, you would have to add most all data and updates that you have entered and programs etc since then..Have you done any backups to your data. if sso the process might not be so onerous..If you do get it sorted out make sure you do backups in the future and it wouldnt hurt to make your backup disc..procedure should be in your user manual

Saugen, thanks for the reply.

I tend to store my vital files on an external drive and don't really keep much on the HD other than applications programs or files which I'm prepared to sacrifice per se.  Obviously hoping there is a "quick" way to resolve the BSOD and avoiding going back to factory settings; but, I think this evening, I shall bite the bullet and do just that and spend the time reinstalling my software.  Its only time - and thank goodness for Scotch!!

... I've found the best solution for any computer problem usually is locating RoyalLochNager.drm or Bunnahabhain.drm and downloading it straight to your system....

Well, I wouldn't go as far to mention emergency, nor casualty, for that matter. But, it certainly made things more enjoyable....

... Well, things got abit more rogered (by my admitted stupidity) and no desktop in safe mode, so going to factory settings, was going to do that a couple of evenings ago but other things got in the way so going to start after lunch.  Don't mind, clean slate in the end. Or, I'm going shopping later on - not for more scotch, tho!

Back up your personal data. Windows 7 ISO can be downloaded legally from the net, burn it to a disk, install it and grab the drivers from Acer direct for your model. Piece of cake, literally. Have a scotch afterward, I prefer single malt though tongue.gif

cheers ...
