Can i install win 7 over win 8?

Hi, i have a laptop that had windows 7 home premium on, i upgraded windows 8 over it and have now realised i'd like to go back to windows 7, but am i able to do so without having to format my drive and lose everything, or will setup give me an option to downgrade etc?

Can OP do a repair installation of wins7 since they have valid wins key?
That way they have wins.old & can retrieve/save data.

Yes, I read on James' other thread about extracting the key from windows.old file

Microsoft thinks that one can restore the Windows environment using Windows.Old file

cheers guys thats great news, i will give this a try.

One question though, if i do whats been suggested above will windows 7 keep my programs etc that i have installed right now?

Tough question, upgrade can .... not sure about downgrading and recovering though. Back them up just in case. Download Belarc Adviser, run it and see if you can get the keys from all the current installed programmes
