Good Ebay Deal or Scam--Acer Aspire 2012?

I just purchased a new Acer Aspire 2012 with the 64 MB M11 off of Ebay for the unbelieveable price of $1125 shipped. I was just browsing with no intention of actually buying when I came across this awesome deal. It's from a power seller with 99% positive feedback and she has sold highend notebooks before so I feel pretty secure but the selling price seems to be too good to be true. I guess I will find out in a few days. There are 2 more available so if anyone is interested, do a search on Ebay.

I will post an update in a few days to let everyone know what happened.

Hopefully you didn't pay yet as this may very well be a scam. See what ebay scam artist do is they target the email address of reputable sellers saying that you account has been banned please enter user ID and PW w/ a submit button all in the body of the email. Now the careless seller will actually do that and not change their PW in which case the hacker now looks thru the seller's sale history...lists something that the person probably would sell and at a very low price. They catch a few bites for people looking for great deals, and just take the money screwing the seller's reputation + you out of your money!

If you haven't paid yet I would email the seller asking question # 2, but it is not as effective considering you already bid and won the auction. They really don't have to accomodate you in this manner at all, but if they agree to I would think that is a good sign.

Rules for ebay trading:

1) Never bid on anything with a super low price without contacting the seller its more than likely either a scam or damaged goods.
2) Ask the seller if it would be possible if you could have a friend in the area bring cash to an exchange in person for the item. If they don't respond or say no to this there is a HIGH probablity that this is a scam.
3) Remember the rule "If it is too good to be true, then it probably is."

I considered all that but payment was made through paypal and the seller is verified and the name matched the sellers name so it seems pretty legit. But you do have me a little worried though.

never pay by any form of cash... ie: western union

i was in the market for a powerbook g4 many months ago and found a 17" for like 1500 dollars... teh guy was very polite and told me a big story how he was travelling in europe and needed the moeny sent there

those sellers are scammers

Cash can be used a method to to seperate scammers from the real deal, so I wouldn't say never use it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using cash if you do the trade in person, ie meet somewhere, they bring product, you bring cash, do a quick test to see if things are in working condition, and then give the cash. If someone doesn't agree to that practice then they are more than likely trying to rip you off.

i urge u to read that

something every1 should be aware of

i almost got tricked into it when i was in the market for a home theatre surround sstem...

the bose lifestyle 28 retailed at 2500 dollars

i found some on ebay for 1800 (which was legit)

and then one day i found one for 1000 dollars

the guy saidhe only took western union and he needed it sent to germany

i went to my local iquor store nd got the form and then i was like man i ened to give him 1000 dollars in cash for western union to go thru... this is kinda nuts (i always use my CC for everything, i have like 20 bux in cash at the max all the time)

so i backed out and did some research, found out about scammers etc

I paid by Paypal so for this auction to be a scam, the guy who set up the auction would have to hijack both the seller's Ebay and Paypal accounts and then change the address/and or checking account on file with Paypal to retrieve the payment. So I'm thinking that I am relatively safe.

Also, in looking over the auctioneers previous auctions, I see that he has successfully sold over 10 new IBM t40's in the last 2 months that were marked down by at least $300 and his most recent auction, he sold a new Toshiba that retails for $1300-$1400 but he sold for $950 shipping included.

If the auction is legit, than I found a great notebook for about $500 off its retail price. If this is a scam, then I am out only $625 since Paypal has a $500 guarantee. Oh well, either way I guess I will found out on Tuesday.

The paypal buyer protection thing is crap...unless you check that box where they ask for extra money to insure that you can receive all your money back incase the trade goes bad you will have a very difficult time getting the money back from them!

I really, really hope that I am wrong...but.....
I just looked at your auction, and, I am sorry. My gut reaction is that you have been scammed. This person says they ship overnight immediately with tracking. They will probably reply to emails to get time to "drain" their Paypal account. Send them email on Monday, and see if you are sent a legitimate tracking number that you can actually track by Monday night. If they don't reply or send tracking, then...
I believe that if it is a Paypal "buyer protection program logo" (blue shield below seller's name) then you are covered by Paypal up to $500 and then by EBAY up to $200 additional with a $25 deductible. All in all, I believe you could be out a good bit of money. It also takes a good bit of time to get your money back if you do recover it. PLEASE UNDERSTAND....PAYPAL IS NOT A BANK, THEY ARE NOT A CREDIT CARD, they are NOT there to protect you. Since a year or so ago, they are owned by EBAY, and they exist solely to be a medium for auction payments. That's all they are. Do NOT be suckered into thinking that they are a bank or a credit card company, or that they are safe to use. Your deal may be good, and it may be bad. I have lost about $500 through Paypal. Each time, I thought that I had followed all of the rules to be covered. I HAD NOT!!! From this $500 loss I got $145 back from EBAY on one transaction, so I am out $355!!
Each time, the deal was almost "too good to be true". Each time the seller quickly replied to all of my emails and questions, until I paid, and then I never heard from them again!!!
NEVER AGAIN!!!

Again, in order for this to be a scam the scammer has to have hijacked both the person's ebay account and their paypal account. That I think is somewhat unlikely. But if it is a scam, maybe my credit card company can help. I did make an online purchase even it was through paypal and my credit card (Chase Platinum Visa) guarantees against online fraud. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

YES, that was the one good thing you did (to use a credit card and not a checking account through Paypal.) Your credit card company should stand behind you.
Again, I really hope that I am wrong, and that you get the notebook.

That is also iffy...some credit card companies say that you lose their support/protection on 3rd party billing transactions. Paypal is a 3rd party here (hopefully your credit card company doesn't do this)...you should honestly be prepared to kiss a lot of that money away.

Lesson to be learned...don't make hasty decisions. There are very few things in life that are truly great deals where its just, "Wow I should buy this right away!"

Anyway for your sake I hope I am wrong.

And also...by posting this post you had the feeling somewhere inside you that this deal maybe was a scam in the first place. Generally its a good idea to trust those feelings.

As for this...its not unlikely at all. The majority of internet users are VERY careless with their passwords and such. There is a fair percentage of people who use the same password for everything and never change it. Now if the seller has password habbits like this its very easy for the hacker to get their ebay account and paypal too.

The scam most likely came in the form of an email to that person...so they have the login for paypal (email address), they get the ebay user ID, and ebay password...which also ends up being the paypal password.

And just because they run a big ebay business successfully doesn't mean that they will be good at keeping it secure by changing passwords and such. The business can be smooth but the owner can suck at managing passwords, mostly because they don't understand the potential damage that can be done (on top of things like having trouble remembering a bunch of different passwords). People like that are definitely the majority of internet users...careful people are a minority.

Well so far, so good. I received a tracking number earlier today. It is scheduled to be delivered Tuesday afternoon.

Here's knocking on wood that I dont get a package full of phonebooks.
I'll toss a few knockers in there too for ya.

Hope its legit too.

Just last night I reported a guy on Amazzon selling a Powerbook 17 inch for only 1450! Said it was brand new...a gift he didn't want! I emaield him about and said that if I wanted to buy it, I would have to register with www.safedeals-online.com in order to pay for it.

I did a search to find out that this was listed as a fraud site amongst several other websites claiming to be "escrow" services.

I emailed the guy back saying that because of the info I found, I was skeptical....he didnt respond and the next thing I knew, the item was no longer listed on amazon.com! (you know how they have individual merchants selling their items too).

Amazon said they notified the proper people on their end and also said that for a merchant to require payment through something other than amazon's system is a vilation of their policy anyway....hopefully no one is ever scammed by this jerk.

NOT!! I just received the notebook and its a beaut!! The screen is super nice with no dead pixels. It runs very quiet and cool (the bottom does get a little warm though but nothing uncomfortable). No benchmarks yet, but I will post a thorough review later. The only negative is setting up the wireless. I can get connected but I cant maintain the 54mps like I can on my dell d500. I guess I got some more tweaking to do. I'll post more later.

Awesome, I been looking at this notebook, too (though I probably won't get as awesome a deal as you did ) But I do have some questions about it.

1. Does this notebook have the "Arcade" hardware?

2. Have the hard drives been partitioned into separate FAT32 files or what?

3. How does the touchpad and keyboard feel?

Thanks.

1. No it does not.
2. Yes
3. Touchpad is a bit stiff but the keyboard is excellent. Not as nice as the one that I have on my sager 4780 but much nicer than the one on my wife's dell d500 and the gateway m505xl that I used to have.
