ASUS UEFI Boot from CD/DVD (X55U)
The following explains the process to boot from CD/DVDs or Live-USBs on the ASUS X55U.
Notebook Model: X55U-FS22-CB
CPU: AMD E450
RAM: DDR3 1333 4GB
Where’s the BIOS?
I bought this notebook which came with Windows 8. However, based on the specifications, the hardware is not well suited for Windows 8 as this device is slightly more powerful than a netbook, but underpowered for a notebook. Nonetheless, this was bought for light tasks like surfing the web and writing documents. Furthermore, the first intention was too run a less demanding operating system like Puppy Can Bike 5.4.3 off a Live-CD or a Live-USB.
Anwyay, a Live-CD was inserted into the DVD drive, but the notebook would not boot it. It would boot straight to Windows 8 on the hard drive. Other than a fancy splash boot screen there were no messages indicating the keys to access the BIOS.
As it turns out the X55U does not have a BIOS but a UEFI which has a legacy BIOS mode.
According to the online manual Version E7051, during the boot screen:
Press “ESC” to access the boot menu
Press “F2” to access the BIOS setup
After pressing the “ESC” key the boot menu displayed two options. The first was the hard drive where Windows 8 was installed. The second was to enter the BIOS setup. There was a Live-CD in the DVD drive but it was not showing up as option.
Automatically Boot from CD/DVD
To get the ASUS X55U to boot first from the DVD drive do the following:
Press “ESC” or “F2” to enter the BIOS setup
Under the “Boot” tab, enable “Launch CSM”
Under the “Security” tab, disable “Secure Boot Control”
Save the changes and exit
Press “ESC” or “F2” to enter the BIOS setup again
Under the “Boot” tab, the DVD drive and available flash drives will appear. Set the DVD drive as the first boot option.
Save the changes and exit
Now the X55U will first attempt to boot from the DVD drive. Moreover, if the boot menu is accessed, the DVD drive, hard drive, and USB flash drives (if detected), will appear as boot options.
Got a few scratches, too as my new MSI with Win8 has UEFI by default + GPT drive. Had to disable UEFI to get that boot selection to pop up. And there was no way to fix that corrupted GPT drive but no bigger loss as I changed to a SSD.
