Aussie Performance

Hi all

Looking at buying the 9100. Like everyone else i have a couple of questions i hope someone can help me out with. The specs i want are as follows.

P4 3.2
WSXGA
1024 Ram
60 Gig 7200 RPM HDD
128 MB ATI
1450 Wireless
Bluetooth

I want the machine as a desktop replacement. I like the idea of having a portable gaming machine that i can do my work on aswell. My intentions are to play a lot of the newer high performance games and im wondering how previous users have coped ? The games i like are Far Cry, COD, Zero Hour and Battlefield. Does the 9100 with these specs cut it ? Also the screen res. After reading in this forum ive decided on the WSXGA. Is this the best choice for games ?

Does anyone know how the Dell special deals work ? They rotate once a week, do they repeat themselves eventually or are they a once off ? I really want the double ram and HDD upgrade, that by far sounded like the best deal.

seems like you will love your system based on the games you play

I'd advise against the WSXGA

Why do you advise against the WSXGA ??

This is where im really not sure, some say WUXGA some say WSXGA.

From what ive read so far the SXGA is best suited for games as the UXGA has a res that is too high for games to properly support and run well.

Because of the Hitachi screen crap

WXGA is best for games - 1680x1050 is still a very high resolution for video games with a M11

ya, you gonna run games on xga res anyway, i'd go wuxga too. i have wuxga and the scaling is fine + since you wanna work with that machine too you'll love wuxga

Mate, don't worry about the Hitachi thing with the WSXGA+ screens for OZ, they are sending them to the US! Haha...

I have been assured by the sales and tech staff in Malaysia that all screens shipped for the WSXGA+ to Oz are Samsung.

Go for it... you will be happy with it. I am!!

If you go with the WUXGA you will be fine anyway.

Good luck!

The deals are cyclical. They offer the double memory deal + some random extra about once every 2 months or so. Whether you will get Mem + HD remains to be seen, for example when I ordered mine it was Double mem + free printer (later haggled some, but thats another topic). In any case, if you wait you can take advantage of that deal, as it is definately the best of them.

As for the WSXGA, I have been informed the new revision Hitachi's are now shipping which resolve the previous beefs with that display. As far as which one you should go with it is personal preference. I used to have the WUXGA on my i8500 but found it too small. DPI settings helped some, but caused their own problems in a lot of programs I used. I opted for the WSXGA on my new i8600 and haven't looked back, its fantastic. You won't benefit from the extra WUXGA resolution in games as the card is not powerful enough the run that high in most games, however you should ask yourself if you will benefit from it on the desktop (great for photo editing).

And as for only the Samsung's being shipped to Oz I think you may have been told a porky. They are built in the same place, from the same pool of components. However I must mention of the 4 people (thats including myself) that I know with the i8600, all with WSXGA, they have all been Samsungs so you never know.

I agree with SilkDawg, go for the SXGA, it is awesome! (Samsung - Australia!!) My 9100 has performed flawlessly since the day it arrived and now has over 100 hours on it including some pretty heavy gaming.

I bought mine during the double RAM extra HD special, and since then none of the deals even come close to the value I received. I got mine, as spec'd below for $3344 Australian, any which way you spec the current deals, nothin comes close... just wait for the next double ram deal, it will only be a matter of weeks...

BTW SilkDawg, I reformatted the other day and just installed the bare bones system, it runs even better now, though the 3d mark 2003 still gives 3358, so no change there.
