USB 2.0 / Firewire 120GB Combo Drive

Thread Starter
Just got my 5660 and setting it up at my office.

Just wondering, can I use this drive with my laptop, and could I actually put an OS on it and boot to it, AND/OR just store files ?

I don't quite know how an external drive works I have never used one before and I have never understood having multiple OS's on one machine how might that work ???

Here is a link to it....

You cannot boot from an external drive without utilizing some very tricky technics. But I am sure there is an open source project out there somewhere trying to do it.

The drive will work using firewire or USB 2.0, and you should have both ports on your laptop -- it just depends on what cable you have with it. I believe the 5660s have 6 pin firewire ports, so you can plug in without a converter, just pure firewire cable. Firewire is suppose to be better for sustained transfer rates, compared to USB 2.0, but I am sure either would work.

And since the HD comes with a usb 2.0 cable, you will probably have to go that route. Pretty much just plug it in.

Multiple OS's is a complicated subject, I suggest you do a google search on 'running multiple operating systems'. You will have to run two operating systems on one HD if you go the laptop route, unless you somehow put 2 HDs in your 5660, and that HD would have to be partitioned into two sections -- unless you're running two windows, you can just run on one partiton -- but its unrecommended. This is probably all greek to you, so I suggest you just start reading the best you can.

Brian.
