OH that fragbook with the linux penguin on it, theres a funny story behind that one.
I remember the guy that ordered it. He originally wanted a voodoopc laptop because he desperately wanted an AMD64 based laptop (M:860) but because he wanted a "free" no dead pixel policy badly he was out of luck.
Since it wasnt "free" this guy went over to falcon, but stuck around the voodoo forums until he went nuts and started to threaten to sue voodoo and forum members because of mental anguish and slipping grades over deciding on a notebook purchase or something like that. He was finally banned when he threatened bodily hard to people on the forums.

It was so rediculous it was hilarious.

The laptop looks good at least.

BTW. I wonder if any of these boutique versions are overclocked underwarranty? That might be worth that extra cost. Anybody have benchies for them?
none of them are overclocked at all, heheh you wouldnt have to ask if they were, it would be pretty big news

Hello,

I'm new, so my question is that these systems are barebone, for the parts, like the DVD drive and stuff, any parts will fit?

Hate to bring back an old thread but someone asked if any shop oc's under warranty and someone else said no.

Actually Velocity Micro does...they call it basic and moderate optimization. Basic is free and they claim 2-3% better performance (I called to ask about this optimization) Moderate is 40 bucks and they claim 7-8% increase.

When I asked what they based this 2-3 and 7-8 percent on, they said "benchmarks we do and some other stuff"

My actual guess is they overclock the card 2-3% and 7-8%, but that wouldn't equal a similar increase in performance. I'm planning to buy one in a couple of days so I will be able to post yet another review of the CL56, although from a reseller I don't believe we have a review of yet.

Hey everyone.

Would one of you mind posting a shot of the CL56's boot up screen? I didn't see any in this thread.

Thank you.

... with the bios logo on, its just a black screen with the centrino logo in the bottom right corner with the words "PRESS f2 TO ENTER SETUP" at the bottom of the screen... whats there to see?

With the bios logo off, you just get a bun of system info, not much more interesting.

I have the Compal CL56 assembly Manuel, if you know where I can host the file for DL let me know or want to hit-me-up on AIM “xxDRIVE Inxx” I’ll be glad to hand it over

FYI I’m on and off of AIM alot and the file I believe is about 15mb
post #117 of 122
stupid question but is it really necessary to strip down the paint with sandpaper and prime it? I want to paint my CL56 but i dont have that much experience any help would be awesome!
...IMHO it's the only way to do it if you want a nice lookin laptop. I don't know what kind of paint was used on the original but using a non compatible paint might just cause it to bubble or flake later on..There are different kinds of primers for plastic, metal..etc, most easily available at a hobby shop..strip it, sand it, prime it , paint it, lastly clear coat it if you want a nice sheen to make the paint last...

nice machine, but for the ppl who buy the expensive ones like me its just that sometimes one may want to have the parts of the laptop they cannot or do not want to paint themselves painted and look cool, while the components, you can upgrade down the line if you feel like it. Got my laptop for 2600, not too bad painted. lasted me since the CL50 days, got it upgraded to a CL56, another benefit of going with voodoo.
The cpu and ram though... not so much of a big boost from getting the top of the line, still being held back by the same video card. The ram might be of use if you are working with large photoshop files though, other than that, its kind of a waste.
Different strokes for different folks.
